MEN FINISH THIRD, WOMEN SEVENTH AT UCR INVITATIONAL

Lea Wallace and Chris Romo led the Hornet women and men at the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. —Chris Romo led a group of four Sacramento State runners in the top 50 to help lift the Hornets to a third-place finish at the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational. The Hornet women placed seventh.
Romo ran 24:34.4 to finish 12th overall and ninth among collegiate athletes in the meet. His time was just 32 seconds off the winning time of BYU's MIles Batty. Cole Younger ran 24:58.6 to finish 29th and Nathanael Litwiller was 34th in 25:02.8. Freshmen Reesey Byers and Zach Kaylor also had their times counted by the team. Byers ran 25:11.0 to place 46th while Kaylor placed 51st in 25:16.1.
BYU won the team title with 26 points. The Cougars had five of the top 11 collegiate times to secure the win. Host UC Riverside placed second with 99 points while the Hornets took third with 128. Loyola Marymount and Cal State Fullerton completed the top five with 145 and 152 points, respectively.
Overall, there were 25 teams and 322 competitors in the 8K race.
Lea Wallace paced the Hornet women in their 5K race with a time of 17:51.4 which placed her 32nd overall. Wallace was closely followed by Lauren Mugnaini (18:02.5/41st), Erin Lewis (18:03.0/43rd) and Lora Marchini (18:04.6/45th). The fifth time came from sophomore Rachel Mitchell who ran 18:12.8 to place 58th.
Arkansas claimed the team championship with 30 points. The Lady Backs had five finishers among the top 12 collegiate athletes in the 179-woman field.
Southern Utah (105), Loyola Marymount (113), UC Riverside (132) and UC Santa Barbara (165) rounded out the top five. Sacramento State score 213 to place seventh.
Tara Erdmann of LMU was the individual winner with a time of 16:45.4.
