MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY OPEN YEAR AT SAN FRANCISCO INVITATIONAL

SAN FRANCISCO — The Sacramento State women finished fourth and the men placed seventh at the San Francisco Invitational on Saturday morning at Golden Gate Park. The meet was the season opener for both teams.
Freshman Rachel Mitchell paced the Hornet women in her first collegiate competition. Mitchell ran the 5K course in 19:52.90 and placed 11th overall in the 100-athlete field. Senior Caprice Bradshaw was 17th overall in 19:22.80 and sophomore Jenni Eiremo finished 21st in 19:31.60.
Junior college transfer Krystal Buck also added to the team total with a 26th-place finish in 19:36.60. Senior Mary O'Reilly (29th, 19:44.10), freshman Danzel Bradshaw (35th, 19:58.70) and sophomore Ashley Chavez (38th, 20:05.00) completed Sacramento State women's lineup.
Host USF edged Cal for the team title. The two teams combined for eight of the top 10 individual times. USF scored 32 points while the Golden Bears scored 36. UC Davis was third with 84 while the Hornets (94) and Santa Clara (123) rounded out the top five.
Cal's Keena Kohl captured the individual title in 18:20.30.
The Hornet men were led by Daniel Mitchell who placed 37th overall in 26:34.40 over 8K. Mitchell was one of five freshmen in the Sacramento State lineup at the meet. He was followed by Steven Casado who ran 27:00.20 to place 48th. The final three times were from Cameron Mitchell (57th, 27:28.20), Natinayel Wolde (67th, 27:52.80) and Matt Case (72nd, 28:27.70).
Cal scored 38 points to hold off USF (39) for first place. The remainder of the top five was occupied by San Jose State (90), Santa Clara (124) and the Academy of the Arts (125).
Austin Ramos, who was competing unattached, finished first in the meet at 24:55.30. Cal's Collin Jarvis had the top collegiate time in 25:02.60.
Sacramento State will next be in action on Sat., Sept. 12, at the Hornet Jamboree. The annual meet, which is hosted by the Hornets, will take place at Granite Regional Park.
