RENO, Nev. —Daniel Carlson led the Hornet men and Jodie Leal paced the women in the cross country team’s opening meet of the year at the Nevada Twilight Race, Friday evening at Rancho San Rafael Park.
Carlson ran 21:13 to finish one second ahead of teammate Colin Szehner. The pair finished 24th and 25th overall, respectively and were followed by teammates Jeffrey Paneda (21:36, 30th), Scott Grose (21:48, 32nd), and Jason Sey (22:13, 36th).
As a team, the Sacramento State men finished in fourth place with 98 points. UCLA cruised to the team title with 17 points. The Bruins had eight of the top 10 individuals and were followed by UC Riverside with 51 points. Humboldt State rounded out the top three with 98 points.
In the women’s race, newcomers Leal and Renisha Robinson led the Hornet attack. Leal completed the 4K course in 17:03 to place 26th. Robinson was one second back in 27th place. Freshman Lora Marchini was 30th overall in 17:17, Erin Wachter ran 17:57 to place 36th overall and Mary Wagner finished 44th in 18:37.
UC Riverside won the women’s crown with 21 points. The Highlanders were followed host Nevada (49), UCLA (53), Sacramento State (124) and Humboldt State (130).
The Hornets will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host the Hornet Jamboree at Granite Regional Park.
