HOLTZ AND CARLSON LEAD CROSS COUNTRY AT REGIONALS

PORTLAND, Ore. --- Kristina Holtz recorded the third-highest finish and ran the fifth-best time in Sacramento State history to lead the women and Daniel Carlson recorded the sixth-best time to pace the men at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday. The race, which was held at Blue Lake Park, covered 6K for the women and 8K for the men.

Hotlz ran 22:58.74 to place 63rd overall in the 199-woman field. Her placement at the regionals only trails former All-American Marisa Avendano at Sacramento State. Avendano was third in 1996 and ninth in 1997. Holtz was followed by Erin Wachter who ran 23:50.70 to place 120th. Grecia Garcia and Mary Wagner finished back-to-back in 154th and 155th. Garcia ran 24:42.69 while Wagner clocked 24:4.52. Beatrice Mireles completed the team in 168th place (25:13.16).

Stanford won the team title with 42 points. UC Santa Barbara was second, 30 points behind the Cardinal. Sacramento State placed 24th out of 30 with 636 points.

The men’s race saw a change in the Hornet standings. Carlson became the first Sacramento State runner to lead the team other than Dominic Vogl since Oct. 29 of last season. Carlson ran 32:44.02 to place 83rd out of 164. Jeffrey Paneda was second on the team in 91st place after running 32:59.79 and was followed by Jose Garcia who was 93rd in 33:01.28. Vogl, who was coming off a top-10 showing at the Big Sky Championships, ran 33:06.29 to place 98th. Jason Sey and Colin Szehner completed the lineup for the Hornets. Sey was 123rd in 34:05.26 and Szehner ran 34:23.99 to place 137th.

Oregon edged Stanford for the team title. The Ducks scored 69 points to win by 19. Sacramento State was 15th overall with 483 points. There was a total of 25 teams competing in the men’s race.

The meet marked the final competition for cross country this season.
