YOUTH MOVEMENT CARRIES MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TO EIGHTH

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's cross country showcased its youth at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Saturday at Baylands Regional Park.
The Hornets finished eighth as a team — in the largest field to ever compete in the annual race (19 teams, 173 runners) — with its top five finishers being freshmen or sophomores.
Freshman Reesey Byers produced the top time on the team, running the 8K course in 24:39.8 to place 29th overall. Byers' time was 54 seconds off the winning time of 23:45.1 from UC Davis' Jon Peterson.
Sophomore Nathanael Litwiller ran 24:43.3 and finished 33rd to rank second on the team. Freshman Zach Kaylor was 61st overall in 25:03.7. Redshirt freshman Cole Younger (25:18.4) and sophomore Daniel Mitchell (25:35.5), placed 86th and 96th, respectively, to complete the scorers for the team.
Lamar captured the team title with 51 points. Chico State was second with 62 points while UC Davis (113), San Francisco (127) and Boise State (137) completed the top five.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Big Sky Championships in Spokane, Wash., on Oct. 30.
