CROSS COUNTRY HAS RECORD BREAKING DAY AT NCAA WEST REGIONAL
11/15/2008
STANFORD, Calif. —Kristina Holtz and Colin Szehner each recorded the fastest time in school history at the NCAA West Regional to pace Sacramento State, Saturday afternoon at the Stanford.
Holtz headlined a banner day for the women, who finished 15th overall, by running 21:17.27 over the 6K course. Her time easily beat the previous best mark for a Hornet at the meet which was 21:34.00 by Melissa Madeson in 2000. Holtz’s 48th-place finish also ranks as the third highest in school history at the regional. Her place trails only former All-American Marisa Avendano who was third in 1996 and ninth in 1997.
Holtz was not the only member of the team to put their name in the record book. Sophomore Renisha Robinson ran 21:42.01, Caprice Bradshaw clocked 21:53.25, Erin Lewis recorded a time of 22:02.90 and Jodie Leal crossed the line in 22:14.77 to rank third through sixth, respectively. Robinson also moved into fifth place in school history by placing 69th overall.
The men’s race also saw some record-breaking performances by the Hornets. Szehner ran 30:37.52 to set the school record at the NCAA Regional while Dominic Vogl recorded the second-fastest time in 30:56.26. The pair also recorded the second and third highest finishes at the meet in school history by placing 50th and 59th, respectively. Hector Delgado has the highest finish ever after placing 21st in 1997.
Kyle Lackner moved into ninth place on the times list with a time of 32:39.38. Chris Romo (33:02.90), Jason Sey (33:06.12) and Scott Grose (33:14.90) rounded out the lineup.
The women’s team standings were dominated by the Pac-10 which had the top four scores. Washington finished first in the meet with 25 points and was followed by Oregon (62), Stanford (91) and Arizona State (128). Portland (215) finished fifth and had the best finish among non-Pac-10 schools.
Oregon’s Alex Kosinski finished first overall in 19:59.01.
Oregon easily won the men’s race with 38 points and nearly doubled-up second place Stanford (72). Portland (85), California (116) and Washington (122) completed the top five.
The individual title went to Galen Rupp who ran 27:41.24 over the 10K course.
The meet was the final event for Sacramento State during the year. The season was highlighted by the women’s team finishing second at the Big Sky Championships and Scott Abbott being named the Big Sky Women’s Coach of the Year.
