MEN FINISH SECOND, WOMEN FOURTH AT SANTA CLARA BRONCO CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

SUNNYVALE, Calif. —Colin Szehner and Scott Grose finished fifth and 10th, respectively, to help the Sacramento State men’s cross country team to a second-place finish at the Santa Clara Bronco Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. The Hornet women finished fourth overall and were led by Kristina Holtz’s seven-place showing.
The meet featured four races during the day. The competition included an open and individual race for both the men and the women.
In the women’s open meet Mary Wagner ran 18:44 over the 5K course and was second in the race behind Erica Sahli’s winning time of 18:39. Athena Gillen was ninth overall in 19:24 while Kirsten Reed (19:31) and Ashley Chavez (19:33) were 12th and 13th, respectively.
Times were considerably faster in the invitational race which included 143 runners and 17 schools. Holtz crossed the line in 17:38 and was just off the pace of Long Beach State’s Sarah Apgar who won in 17:14. Caprice Bradshaw was second for the Hornets in 17:44 to place 10th overall. Jodie Leal ran 18:11 and Erin Lewis 18:17 to finish 31st and 33rd. The team was also represented by Erin Wachter (18:37/54th), Renisha Robinson (18:54/65th) and Lora Marchini (19:02/71st).
Long Beach State easily won the team title with 88 points. Santa Clara tallied 120 to place second just ahead of Nevada (127), Sacramento State (129) and New Mexico State (143) in the top five.
The Hornet men used a small squad in the open race but had great success. Garrett Infausto won the 8K race in 26:23. His time was 23 seconds faster than the closest competitor. Cole Yunger was sixth in 27:05 and Ben Rinn ran 27:33 to place 12th.
In the invitational race, Szehner ran 24:49 and Grose clocked a time of 24:53. Dominic Vogl (24:56) was just three seconds behind Grose and placed 12th. Chris Romo ran 25:30 and finished 29th. Kyle Lackner was 49th overall in 25:53 and Jason Sey ran 26:10 to rank 70th.
In the team competition, Sacramento State scored 81 points and finished second behind Long Beach State’s 76. Boise State (116), Idaho (121) and UC Davis (130) completed the top five in the 14-team, 137-runner field.
Sacramento State will take next week off before heading to the Big Sky Conference Championships on Nov. 1. The meet will be hosted by Portland State.
