DUNCAN, THOMSON PACE CROSS COUNTRY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT MEET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Cagnei Duncan finished 18th and Tristen Thomson was 39th to lead the Sacramento State women's and men's cross country teams on Saturday at the Capital Cross Challenge.

The men were 19th out of 35 teams while the women finished 14th out of 40. This year's Capital Cross Challenge featured some of the best NCAA Div. I teams in the West as well as the elite of NCAA Div. II who were trying to get a sneak peek at the course which will be used for the NCAA Div. II National Championships in November.

Duncan finished first for the women's team for the third time in three meets this season. The junior ran 21:09.8 over the 6K course. She had now placed among the top 20 in all three meets this season and has had each over times range between 20:51.25-21:39.

Rachel Victor made her 2019 debut and finished second on the team and 61st overall in 21:44.7. Blayney Dolan placed 114th with a time of 22:14.0 and Rosemary David ran 22:17.7 to finish 125th. The final time toward the team total came from Emma Armstrong who crossed in 22:54.0 to place 177th.

In the men's 8K race, Thomson ran 24:49.62 to pace the team for the second week in a row. Elijah Changco ranked second on the team in 73rd place with a time of 25:09.29. The men also counted times from Shane Marshall (122nd, 25:34.80), Jacob Moran (181st, 26:06.57) and Abraham Maldonado (184th, 26:07.82).

Cal Poly's Jake Ritter and Seattle Pacific's Kaylee Mitchell were the winners of the men's and women's races. Ritter ran 24:04.10 to win the race by nearly three seconds. Mitchell pulled away to win the women's race by 3.1 seconds.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Santa Clara Invitational on Oct. 19. The race will be the final competitive tuneup for the Hornets before the Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo., on Nov. 2.
