SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The fourth-annual Capital Cross Challenge will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. The men's 8K race will start at 9:50 a.m. while the women's 6K competition will get under way at 10:30.
Along with the collegiate races, there will be several other races which will include high school, middle school and youth athletes. Admission is free to all spectators but there is a $5 charge for parking.
This week's action marks the fourth Capital Cross Challenge. The meet is co-hosted by Sacramento State, the Sacramento Sports Commission and the Sacramento Running Association. Last season, Chico State captured the men's team title and Loyola Marymount was the best NCAA Div. I men's team. San Jose State finished first in the women's team standings.
This year's field includes 14 NCAA Div. I institutions as well as 18 from NCAA Div. II, III or junior colleges. Both California and Santa Clara are currently ranked in the USTFCCCA West Region poll. The Golden Bears are ninth while the Broncos are 11th. In the women's race, Cal is fifth in the West Region poll and the highest ranked team in the field. Chico State is the highest ranked non-Div. I program as the Wildcat men are fifth and the women are sixth in this week's national poll.
Sacramento State has raced in two meets this season. The women recorded a win at the Fresno Cross Country Invitational to start the year and were fourth at the UC Riverside Invitational two weeks ago. The men were second at Fresno and sixth in Riverside. Amy Quinones has paced the women in both races, finishing first at the Fresno Cross Country Invitational and fourth at UC Riverside. The men were led by Andres Sandoval in the first meet and Tristen Thomson in the second competition.
Along the Capital Cross Challenge, Sacramento State will also host the Big Sky Conference Championships on Oct. 27 and the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 9 at Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
