SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State cross country teams will get to compete at home this weekend at Capital Cross Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. The men's 8K race will start at 9:50 a.m. while the women's 5K competition will get under way at 10:30.
Along with the collegiate races, there will be several other races which will include high school, middle school and youth athletes. Admission is free to all spectators but there is a charge for parking. This year's meet will be the largest in the race's history with over 3,900 athletes entered for the competitions.
This week's action marks the third Capital Cross Challenge. The meet is co-hosted by Sacramento State, the Sacramento Sports Commission and the Sacramento Running Association. Last season, Arizona State captured the Div. I team championships in both the men's and women's races.
The Hornets have previous hosted the Inter-Regional Jamboree and the NCAA West Regional in 2013 and 2016 at Haggin Oaks. Sacramento State and the Sacramento Sports Commission will welcome back the NCAA Div. I West Regional in 2018 and 2021 as well as the NCAA Div. I Championship in 2019.
This year's field includes 18 NCAA Div. I institutions as well as 13 from NCAA Div. II, III or junior colleges. The men's race will be headlined by Southern Utah which is currently ranked 13th nationally. San Francisco is the highest ranked Div. I women's team as the Dons are sixth in this week's poll. Chico State is ranked fourth in the NCAA Div. II men's poll and the Wildcat women are 11th. Cal Poly Pomona's men's team is seventh and the UC San Diego men are 22nd. In the women's race, Cal Poly Pomona is currently ranked 18th nationally in Div. II.
