DAVID MONK HIRED AS CROSS COUNTRY COACH

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeff Magley announced today the hiring of David Monk as the Hornets' cross country coach.

"I'm excited to have Coach Monk join our coaching staff and become a part of our program," Magley said. "He's an experienced coach who's had success at numerous levels. Coach Monk brings a level of intensity and passion for distance running that will play a major factor in helping our program continue to perform at a championship level."

Monk comes to Sacramento State after spending the past 14 years coaching at the high school level in Northern California. Most recently, he was the cross country and track & field head coach at Armijo High School in Fairfield, Calif. While there, he helped guide the boys and girls cross country teams to Monticello Empire League championships in 2014. The title was the first for the girls program in school history while the boys finished claimed the top spot for the first time since 1978. The boys team went on to repeat the following year and sent an athlete to the state meet for only the second time in Armijo's history.

From 2002-12, Monk was the head coach at Fairfield High School. While there, his teams won three Sac-Joaquin Section girls titles and two boys championships. Monk coached Fairfield to 23 league team titles and qualified 14 relay teams and 22 individuals to the California state meet. In cross country, he had five boys teams reach the state championships between 2005-10.

Monk also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Tulsa from 2001-02. While there, he implemented workouts, arranged travel and lodging and monitored academic progress.

"It is an honor to join the Sacramento State Track & Field/Cross-Country programs," Monk said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with student-athletes at various levels over my career, but working with the Coach Magley and the Hornet staff has been an interest of mine for over a decade and I'm grateful to have been given this chance and look forward to it with great enthusiasm."

Monk competed collegiately at Baylor where he helped guide the Bears to Southwestern Conference cross country championships in 1992 and 1994 — the only two in program history. He was the conference champion in the indoor 3K in 1994 and 1996 and later competed at the USATF cross country championships in 1997. Monk went on to earn his teaching credential from Mary-Hardin University in 1998.

Sacramento State begins its 2016 cross country season on Sept. 3 at the Aggie Open in Davis, Calif. The team will host the Sacramento Capital Cross Challenge on Oct. 1 and the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 11. Both meets will take place at Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
