VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO PACIFIC DESPITE BANDIMERE’S 20 KILLS

11/11/2003

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Despite a match-high 20 kills from Sacramento State junior Sandra Bandimere, the University of the Pacific defeated the Hornets, 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-23), in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at the Spanos Center.

Jennifer Joines led Pacific with 18 kills and a match-best .400 hitting percentage. She also posted a team-high tying 13 digs and match-high five blocks as the Hornets had no answer for the three-time All-American. Bandimere had more than half of the team’s 38 kills in the match as she was the only Hornet to finish with more than five kills and hit better than .300. Bandimere’s 20 kills were one away from her season high of 21 set against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

With the victory, Pacific won its third straight while improving to 15-9 overall. The Tigers, who have never lost to the Hornets in Stockton, Calif. (13-0), improved to 25-2 against Sacramento State in the all-time series between the two teams. The Hornets had their four-match winning streak snapped as the team hit just .169 in the contest. Sacramento State, which dropped to 19-11 overall, is now 1-10 when losing the first game of a match this season.

Pacific hit .289 as a team as Stevie Mussie finished with nine kills, 13 digs and a .375 hitting percentage, and Ashley Groothuis added eight kills and a .286 hitting percentage. The Tigers led the Hornets in kills (51-38), hitting percentage, assists (46-34), aces (12-4) and team blocks (6-4). Sacramento State’s four team blocks tied for the squad’s third-lowest output of the season.

Sacramento State’s Kazmiera Imrie finished with five kills while Lisa Beauchene and Jennifer Ferguson each had four. For the first time all season, junior Emily Wilson was shut out in the kills department as she finished with zero. Freshman Kristin Lutes led the Hornets with four digs.

Sacramento State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in first game before Pacific responded with a 16-1 run to take a commanding 16-4 lead. During that run, Joanna Rentz served out 10-straight points, including three of her match-high five service aces. Joines had seven kills while Pacific limited Sacramento State to just a .103 hitting percentage.

In the second game, Pacific took its first lead at 20-19 and never looked back the rest of the way. Trailing, 19-18, the Tigers ran off 12 of the final 15 points to win the second frame.

In the third game, Pacific closed the frame on a 13-3 run to destroy what had been a 20-17 Sacramento State lead. The 3-0 victory gave Pacific six sweeps over Sacramento State in the last five years.

Sacramento State closes out the regular season this week on the road against Big Sky Conference opponents Weber State (Friday, Nov. 14) and Idaho State (Saturday, Nov. 15). The Hornets need to win both matches while Eastern Washington has to lose twice to earn the Big Sky regular-season championship and the right to host the Big Sky Tournament (Nov. 20-22).
