VOLLEYBALL NO LONGER UNDEFEATED IN THE BIG SKY AFTER LOSS TO EWU

10/12/2003

CHENEY, Wash. -- In a battle of the Big Sky Conference unbeaten teams, the Eastern Washington volleyball team came away with a resounding 3-0 (30-19, 30-17, 30-19) victory over Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at Reese Court. The loss was the Hornets’ worst of the season as the Eagles take over sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

Sacramento State allowed Eastern Washington a .333 hitting percentage, marking the first time this season a Hornet opponent has hit .300. The Eagles dominated in nearly every statistical category, bettering the Hornets in kills (54-34), hitting percentage (.333-.136), assists (43-30), service aces (5-1), digs (60-57) and team blocks (4-3).

Eastern Washington committed just 10 errors during the entire match as the Eagles hit at least .300 in every game of the contest. Sacramento State played arguably its worst match of the year as the team’s largest lead of the night was at 13-10 in the third game. No Hornet player had more than nine kills.

With the victory, Eastern Washington won its 10th-straight while improving to 13-6 overall and 5-0 in the Big Sky. The Eagles have now won three of the last five meetings between the two teams. Sacramento State, which had its four-match winning streak snapped, dropped to 13-8 and 4-1 in the conference. The Eagles have now won five of the last six meetings between the two teams at Reese Court. Sacramento State had opened the conference season with a 4-0 record for the first time since joining the Big Sky in 1996.

The Hornets had no answer for Eastern Washington’s Megan Kitterman (14 kills, .321 hitting percentage), Keva Sonderen (12 kills, .379) and Courtney Bush (11 kills, .391) as the three combined for 37 of the team’s 54 kills. Four of the Eagles’ six starters hit better than .300 and reserve Lindsay Page had seven kills and match-high .467 hitting percentage (7-0-15).

Sacramento State was led by junior Sandra Bandimere’s nine kills while freshman Kristin Lutes led the team with a match-high 17 digs. Freshman Jennifer Ferguson finished with seven kills and 15 digs. The team’s three blocks were the lowest output since the Hornets had two blocks against UC Riverside on Sept. 5. The only Sacramento State player to hit above .300 was senior Lisa Beauchene who had four kills and a .400 hitting percentage (4-0-10).

In the first game, Eastern Washington used a 5-1 run to increase a 15-13 lead to 20-14. From that point, Sacramento State would get no closer than within five points of the Eagle lead. The Hornets had just three kills during the final 21 points of the game as the team hit just .116, committing eight errors in 43 total attacks. The Eagles’ Courtney Bush led all players with five kills as EWU hit .368.

In the second game, Eastern Washington led from start to finish, ripping off a pair of 9-0 runs to take a commanding 22-10 lead. Jessie Wright served out eight points in the Eagles’ first 9-0 run while Emily Hall served out eight points in the second nine-point run. Sacramento State hit just .077 in the game as no Hornet had more than four kills. Conversely, Eastern Washington hit .333 while committing just one error. The 30-17 score tied for the Hornets’ worst performance in a game this season, matching game two of their loss to Loyola Marymount.

In the third game, EWU led, 21-18, before going on a 9-1 run to close the game and match. Hall served out six-consecutive points during that run as the game had been tied, 16-16, midway through the frame.

Sacramento State returns to action next week for a pair of home conference matches against Weber State (Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.) and Idaho State (Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.). Including next week’s contests, the Hornets have just four home matches remaining on the regular-season schedule.
