PORTLAND, Ore. -- Junior Sandra Bandimere had a match-high 19 kills and senior Lisa Beauchene recorded her sixth triple-double of the season (11 kills, 43 assists, 13 digs and five blocks) to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 (30-26, 22-30, 30-27, 30-28) victory over Portland State in a Big Sky Conference match Friday evening at the Stott Center.With the victory, Sacramento State won for the eighth time in the last nine matches while improving to 13-7 overall and 4-0 in the Big Sky. Tonight’s contest marked the first Big Sky road match of the season as the Hornets had defeated Northern Arizona, Montana State and Montana at home to open the conference season.
The Vikings dropped to 9-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference. After opening the season at 9-1, the Vikings have dropped five-straight contests. Sacramento State continued its dominance of the Vikings as the Hornets won for the 20th-consecutive time in the series and now hold a 25-10 all-time series lead.
Four Hornets recorded double figures in kills comprising Bandimere, Beauchene, senior Kazmiera Imrie (12) and freshman Jennifer Ferguson (13). Portland State led the Hornets in nearly every statistical category, but the Hornets still found a way to win. Sacramento State had to overcome a season-worst 11 service errors.
Beauchene hit a team-best .348 during the match as she was the only Hornet to hit above .300. Bandimere had 13 digs to notch her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman Kristin Lutes (12) and sophomore Mallory Hook (11) rounded out the Hornets with double figures in digs.
Richell Wilson led Portland State with 18 kills while Niki Lambert and Sarah Leenders each had 13.
In game one, the Hornets erased a 21-19 deficit by going on an 11-5 run to end the frame. The Hornets, who hit .277, had three players with at least three kills comprising Bandimere (five), Imrie (four), Ferguson (four) and Wilson (three). Ferguson’s four kills came without an error in five attempts (.800) while Bandimere had no errors in 12 attacks (.417).
In the second game, Sacramento State hit just .104 and committed five service errors on the way to a 30-22 loss. The Hornets never had a lead during the game as Portland State’s eight-point margin of victory was also the team’s largest lead of the frame.
Sacramento State used a 13-3 run midway through game three to take a commanding 20-11 lead. PSU would close to within two points of the Hornets’ lead at 29-27 before Sacramento State finally closed the game at 30-27. Bandimere accounted for the Hornets’ final three points of the frame with kills.
In game four, Sacramento State erased a late 25-24 deficit by going on a 6-3 run to close the game and match. A Bandimere kill ended the contest after consecutive Portland State kills closed the Hornet lead to 29-28.
Sacramento State returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 12, as it travels to Eastern Washington for a first-place showdown with the Eagles at 3 p.m. The match will be televised live on the College Sports Television Network (CSTV) as part of its broadcast package called “Sunday Night Spike”.
