ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Despite a season-high 17 kills from junior Emily Wilson, the Sacramento State volleyball team fell to Ohio, 3-2 (30-22, 26-30, 30-23, 29-31, 15-9), in the first round of the Albuquerque Marriott Lobo Tournament Friday evening at Johnson Arena.The Hornets (5-6 overall) play their final two matches of the tournament tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 21) against Kentucky (9 a.m. PST) and host New Mexico (6:30 p.m. PST). Ohio, which is ranked 36th in the AVCA/USA Today poll, improved to 7-3 overall this season.
Wilson led all Sacramento State players in kills, hitting percentage (.400) and blocks (six). She committed just five errors in 30 total attacks and recorded at least six blocks for the fifth time in the last six matches. The Hornets dropped to 0-2 in five-game matches this season with the other defeat coming in their previous match against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Three Bobcats finished with double-digit kills comprising Laura Hageman (match-high 22 kills), Julie Winkfield (17) and Lindsay Judice (11). Ohio hit .246 in the match while limiting Sacramento State to a .149 percentage. The Bobcats also tallied 15.0 team blocks, the most by a Hornet opponent this year.
Sacramento State had three other players finishing with double figures in kills, including freshman Shannon Roland who contributed a career-high 11. The Auburn, Calif., native had one kill all season entering the match. Junior Sandra Bandimere recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Kristin Lutes finished with a match-high 15 digs, running her consecutive matches streak with at least 10 digs to nine matches.
