MILWAUKEE -- Sacramento State head volleyball coach Debby Colberg became just the seventh active Div. I coach to record 700 career victories as the Hornets defeated Illinois State, 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-23), in the second round of the Panther Invitational Saturday morning at Klotsche Center.Colberg, who has been named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year five times in the last six years, moves her career record to 700-253, good for a .735 career winning percentage. In her 28th season at Sacramento State, Colberg has led the Hornets to 14 league titles and 22 postseason berths while her teams have averaged more than 25 wins per season during her tenure.
The Hornets, who improve to 2-0 at the two-day, three-match tournament – and 5-4 overall this season – return for their final match of the tournament tonight against host Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 5 p.m. PST. Sacramento State’s record is now above .500 for the first time this season. Illinois State moves to 1-1 at the tournament and 4-5 overall this year.
Sacramento State, which improved its winning streak to four matches, had four players with double figures in kills comprising junior Sandra Bandimere (team-high 11 to go along with a .333 hitting percentage), seniors Kazmiera Imrie (10) and Lisa Beauchene (10 and a .450 hitting percentage), and sophomore Shannon Arts (season-high 10 and team-best .467 hitting percentage). The Hornets hit .288 in the match – the team’s third-highest percentage of the season – while limiting Illinois State to a .176 percentage.
After missing Friday night’s match for personal reasons, freshman Jennifer Ferguson finished with eight kills and eight digs. Freshman Kristin Lutes posted a team-best 12 digs. Three Sacramento State players finished with at least three blocks comprising junior Emily Wilson (four), Imrie (four) and Arts (three).
Illinois State was led by Laura Doornbos (match-high 12 kills), Paige White (match-high 15 digs) and Kelly Rikli (11 digs).
With the Redbirds hitting .176, the Hornets have yet to allow an opponent to hit .300 this season.
