BEAUCHENE’S BIG DAY LEADS VOLLEYBALL TO VICTORY OVER EIU

9/12/2003

MILWAUKEE -- Senior Lisa Beauchene recorded her second triple-double of the season – and 13th of her career – to lead the Sacramento State volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 30-20) victory over Eastern Illinois in the first round of the Panther Invitational Friday evening at the Klotsche Center.

Beauchene finished with 10 kills, 41 assists, 10 digs, six blocks and a season-high .714 hitting percentage. The Auburn, Wash., native, who had 10 kills with no errors in 14 total attacks, has two triple-doubles in her last three matches and has hit at least .300 in five-consecutive matches.

The Hornets, who have won three-straight and are now 4-4 this season, finish the two-day, three-match tournament tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 13) against Illinois State (9 a.m. PST) and host Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5 p.m. PST). With the victory, head coach Debby Colberg (699-253) is now one win shy of career win No. 700. She would become just the seventh active Div. I coach to record 700 victories.

Junior Sandra Bandimere led the Hornets in kills (season-high tying 18) while recording her first double-double of the season (18 kills, 13 digs). Emily Wilson (10) rounded out the Hornet threesome with double figures in kills as the junior also posted a match-high seven blocks. Wilson has now recorded at least six blocks in three-straight matches. The Hornets finished with 12.0 team blocks for the third-consecutive match.

Sacramento State’s defense held Eastern Illinois to a .056 (31-23-142) hitting percentage as the Hornets tallied a season-high 73 digs despite the match lasting just three games. Sacramento State, which hit .236 in the match, also had seven aces, including a career-high tying four from sophomore Shannon Arts.

Five Hornets finished with at least 10 digs comprising Bandimere, Beauchene, sophomore Mallory Hook (13), junior Stephanie Gamst (13) and freshman Kristin Lutes (career-high 17). Lutes has now tallied double-figure digs in six-consecutive matches and seven of eight overall.

Megan Kennedy (eight kills), Mary Welch (eight kills) and Erica Gerth (match-high 25 digs) led Eastern Illinois.
