VOLLEYBALL BOUNCES BACK WITH WINS OVER GEORGETOWN AND OREGON STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After losing three-straight matches for the first time since 1998, the Sacramento State volleyball team bounced back with victories over Georgetown, 3-1 (30-20, 30-16, 28-30, 30-19), and Oregon State, 3-1 (30-25, 30-22, 21-30, 30-20), in the second and final day of the Sacramento State Invitational Saturday at the Hornets Nest.

The Hornets finish the tournament with a 2-2 record after losing to UC Riverside and Fresno State on Friday. By virtue of its 4-0 record, Fresno State was crowned champions of the tournament while Sacramento State, Oregon State and UC Riverside each finished with 2-2 records. Georgetown finished 0-4.

Sacramento State senior co-captains Lisa Beauchene and Kazmiera Imrie were each named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. In four matches, Beauchene finished the tournament with per game averages of 2.13 kills, 3.47 digs, 10.87 assists and 0.73 blocks per game to go along with a .368 hitting percentage. Imrie finished with per game averages of 3.53 kills, 1.53 digs and 0.60 blocks to go along with a .321 hitting percentage.

Other players named to the all-tournament team were Fresno State’s Kristen Fenton (tournament MVP) and Robyn Keune, UC Riverside’s Rosanna Parizek, Georgetown’s Sara Albert and Oregon State’s Laura Collins.

Against Oregon State, the Hornets used 10 service aces and 12 Beaver service errors to their advantage. Oregon State led the match in most statistical categories (including kills, hitting percentage, digs and assists), but could not pull out the win.

Sacramento State was led by Beauchene, who finished with nine kills, 12 digs, 40 assists, four service aces, six blocks and a .368 hitting percentage. Five Sacramento State players all had at least nine kills including junior Sandra Bandimere (16), Imrie (12), freshman Jennifer Ferguson (nine kills and 10 digs) and junior Emily Wilson (nine kills and a season-high nine blocks). Imrie has now struck for double-figure kills in four-straight matches.

The Hornets hit just .194 in the match, but limited Oregon State to a .225 mark. The Beavers were led by Allison Lawrence who finished with 14 kills and 14 digs. Amanda Eggert chipped in with 15 kills, nine blocks and a .520 hitting percentage.

Against Georgetown, Beauchene recorded her 12th career triple-double (10 kills, 13 digs, 51 assists and a match-best .450 hitting percentage), including just one error in 20 total attacks. Bandimere tallied a season and match-high tying 18 kills to go along with a .410 (18-2-39) hitting percentage. The Hornets hit .294 for the match, their second-best total of the season.

Imrie had 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage while Ferguson had a career-high 16 kills to round out the Hornet foursome with double figures in kills. Ferguson also had 10 digs while freshman Kristin Lutes added a career-high tying 14 digs (she also had 14 digs against Oregon State).

The Hornets tallied season highs in kills (68), assists (65), aces (11) and total blocks (12.0). Four Hornets tallied at least four blocks comprising junior Wilson (6), sophomore Shannon Arts (4), Bandimere (4) and Imrie (4). Arts also added a career-high four aces.

Georgetown was led by Sara Albert’s 18 kills while Rachel Nelson had 11.

The Hornets return to action next week to compete in the two-day, three-match Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. Sacramento State will face Eastern Illinois, Illinois State and host Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
