SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State volleyball team lost both of its matches in the first round of the Sacramento State Invitational Friday at the Hornets Nest. The Hornets fell to UC Riverside, 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-24), before dropping their evening match to Fresno State, 3-1 (30-28, 30-19, 23-30, 30-22).

Fresno State and Oregon State both have 2-0 records through the first day of competition while UC Riverside is 1-1, and both Georgetown and Sacramento State are both 0-2. The two-day, 10-match tournament will conclude tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 6) with matches at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Sacramento State (1-4) has now lost three-straight matches for the first time since the 1998 season. The Hornets will look to avoid losing four matches in a row for the first time since 1992. Prior to today’s competition, the Hornets had not lost back-to-back matches at home since the 1992 season.

In the Hornets’ evening match, Fresno State’s Kristen Fenton led all players with 22 kills while Carrie Hartt finished with 19. Four Fresno State players recorded double figures in digs comprising Tuli Peters (17), Tina Brennan (16), Fenton (10) and Stefanie Taelman (10). The Bulldogs hit .294 for the match compared to the Hornets’ .173 mark. Fresno State also totalled nine team blocks while four players hit above .300.

The Hornets’ Kazmiera Imrie matched her career high with 18 kills while Lisa Beauchene narrowly missed her 12th career triple-double, finishing with nine kills, 43 assists and a match-high 20 digs. Beauchene (.316) and Imrie (.303) were the only two Hornets to hit above .300. Freshman Jennifer Ferguson finished with seven kills and 14 digs while freshman Kristin Lutes notched 12 digs.

In the Hornets’ afternoon match, UC Riverside dominated in nearly every statistical category including kills (54-44), hitting percentage (.299-.190), assists (50-41), digs (64-56), total blocks (7.0-2.0) and service aces (4-1).

Three Highlanders finished with double figures in kills comprising Rosanna Parizek (15, .324 hitting percentage), Valerie Bueno (13, .444) and Jamie DeKiewiet (10).

Imrie led the Hornets with 12 kills and 12 digs while Ferguson had nine kills and 10 digs. Lutes added 12 digs to round out the three Sacramento State players with double-figure digs. Sophomore Shannon Arts added seven kills and a team-best .500 (7-1-12) hitting percentage.
