FRESNO, Calif. – Three Bulldogs recorded double figures in kills, led by Kristen Fenton’s 13, as Fresno State defeated the Sacramento State volleyball team, 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-23), in the final match of the Fresno State Quadrangular Saturday evening at North Gym.With the loss, Sacramento State finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, defeating UNLV yesterday before falling to both San Diego and host Fresno State today. The Hornets dropped to 9-5 overall this season with the loss. Fresno State ran its winning streak to six matches as it improved to 12-1. The Bulldogs swept their own tournament, defeating San Diego, UNLV and Sacramento State.
Fresno State hit .297 for the match, the highest output the Hornets have allowed all season long. Conversely, the Hornets hit just .137 and were dominated statistically in kills (55-40), digs (70-55) and team blocks (7.0-3.0). Christy Burnett (12) and Java Johnson (12) rounded out the Bulldogs with double-figure kills.
Five of the eight Fresno State players that appeared in the match tallied double figures in digs, led by Whitney Arena’s 13. The Bulldogs hit .286, .235 and .308, in games one through three, respectively. Fenton’s 13 kills (13-0-27) came with a .481 hitting percentage while Johnson hit .423 (12-1-26).
Sophomore Sandra Bandimere led Sacramento State with 12 kills while no other Hornet recorded more than seven kills. Three Hornets notched double-figure digs comprising senior Jayme Wright (12), junior Olivia Thomas (12) and junior Ali Mathewson (11). Sophomore Emily Wilson finished with seven kills and a team-best .294 hitting percentage (7-2-17).
The Hornets hit just .137 in the match, the team’s third-worst output of the season. The team’s 3.0 blocks was the lowest output of the year.
After playing 13 of its first 14 matches of the season away from home, Sacramento State returns to the friendly confines of Hornet Gym for each of its next four matches. The Hornets begin the homestand with three contests in a span of four days next week. The team begins the week on Wednesday, Sept. 25, against San Francisco before opening up its Big Sky Conference portion of the schedule against both Idaho State (Thursday, Sept. 26) and Weber State (Saturday, Sept. 28). All three matches next week begin at 7 p.m.
NOTES -- Sacramento State has been swept in back-to-back matches for the first time since 2000 when the team lost 3-0 to Weber State and San Francisco...junior Lisa Beauchene had hit at least .400 in seven-consecutive matches before hitting .286 tonight...Sacramento State has hit .234 or less in each of its last six matches and is 2-4 with a .180 hitting percentage over that span...Fresno State has won six of the last seven meetings between the two teams...Thomas overtook Wright for the team lead in digs with 176...Beauchene is now hitting .390 this season and is fourth on the team in kills despite being a setter...Mathewson has tallied double figures in digs three times this season after combining for one such match during the first two years of her career.
