FRESNO, Calif. – Devon Forster led all players with 17 kills while Noel Frohman added 15 kills to lead the University of San Diego to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-23) victory over the Sacramento State volleyball team in the second round of the Fresno State Quadrangular Saturday morning at North Gym.San Diego, which is currently ranked 26th in the USA Today/AVCA poll and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, improved to 9-3. Sacramento State, which beat UNLV in the first round of the tournament last night, had its two-match winning streak snapped while falling to 9-4. The Hornets return to action in their final match of the tournament against host Fresno State tonight at 7:30 p.m. Sacramento State has never beaten San Diego as the team is now 0-5 all-time against the Toreros.
San Diego hit .271 for the match as the team had five players record at least six kills despite the match only lasting three games. The contest marked just the second time the Hornets have been swept this season and the fourth time in the last two years. The Toreros held a distinct advantage over Sacramento State in kills (56-38), assists (54-35) and digs (62-48). Sacramento State hit just .175 and mustered just 38 kills over three games.
The Hornets were led by junior Kazmiera Imrie’s team-best 11 kills while the middle hitter also hit .421 (11-3-19). Junior Lisa Beauchene added seven kills, seven digs, 25 assists and a match-high .700 hitting percentage. Beauchene, who committed zero errors in 10 total attacks and led the team with three blocks, has now hit at least .400 in six-consecutive matches. She’s hitting .516 (54-5-95) over that span.
Senior Trina Book had a team-best and career-high 12 digs while junior Olivia Thomas added 11 digs. Thomas has now recorded double figures in digs in seven of her last nine matches. Sacramento State’s hitting percentage of .175 was its fourth-lowest output of the season.
Three San Diego players hit at least .400 as Frohman’s 15 kills accompanied a .400 hitting percentage (15-3-30). Kristen Hurst led all players with 18 digs and Forster’s 17 kills also came with 13 digs.
NOTES -- After collecting two kills, senior Jayme Wright is now just nine short (991) of reaching 1,000 career kills...Imrie did not lead the team in blocks for the first time in the last seven matches...head coach Debby Colberg has now used the same starting lineup in seven-consecutive matches (Sandra Bandimere, Loretta Coffman, Emily Wilson, Imrie, Wright and Beauchene).
