STORRS, Conn. – The Sacramento State volleyball team defeated both Temple, 3-2 (26-30, 22-30, 30-22, 30-28, 15-8) and host Connecticut, 3-0 (30-19, 30-13, 30-22), and junior Lisa Beauchene was named tournament MVP as the Hornets were crowned champions of the IKON Husky Invitational today at Gampel Pavilion.Sacramento State finished the four-team tournament with a 3-0 record as the Hornets swept Wisconsin-Milwaukee yesterday. In addition, the team increased its winning streak to six matches long and improved its overall record this season to 6-1. Besides Beauchene, junior Kazmiera Imrie and senior Jayme Wright were also named all-tournament.
Beauchene was named tournament MVP after combining for 22 kills, 101 assists, 36 digs and a .377 hitting percentage over three matches. The junior setter notched her fourth career triple-double in this morning’s victory over Temple. Wright combined for 46 kills (4.18 per game) and 34 digs (3.09 per game), and Imrie totalled 30 kills (2.73 per game), 16 blocks (1.45 per game) and 21 digs over the three matches. Beauchene and Wright were also named to the all-tournament team at last week’s Sam Houston State Invitational with Wright taking home MVP honors.
Sacramento State is now off to its best start since the 1995 team began the season with a 7-1 record.
In this evening’s victory over Connecticut, Sacramento State limited the Huskies to just a .025 hitting percentage while holding the advantage in kills (50-30), team blocks (9.0-5.0) and hitting percentage (.281-.025). Wright led all players with 18 kills and junior Olivia Thomas posted a team-best 14 digs. Beauchene finished with eight kills, 29 assists and eight digs while Imrie (nine kills, five blocks) and senior Loretta Coffman (10 digs) also chipped in.
Connecticut (3-3) was led by Melissa Wooley’s nine kills and Stephanie Ziemann’s 16 digs.
Sacramento State returns to action for its home opener on Thursday, Sept. 12, against Butler at 6 p.m. before taking part in the Nevada Invitational Sept. 13-14. The Hornets take on host Nevada on Friday, Sept. 13, and Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Sept. 14.
