POTTER'S 26 KILLS TOO MUCH AS NO. 12 SANTA CLARA DEFEATS VOLLEYBALL

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Becky Potter led all players with 26 kills and a .444 hitting percentage as the 12th-ranked Santa Clara Broncos defeated Sacramento State, 3-1 (22-30, 30-17, 30-27, 30-21) in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at the Leavey Center.

With the victory, Santa Clara has now won nine of its last 10 while improving to 18-3. The Broncos'' only loss at home this season came to 10th-ranked Pepperdine as the team is now 6-1 at the Leavey Center. Sacramento State dropped to 17-9 overall and has lost four in a row to the Broncos over the last four years.

The Hornets also lost for just the second time all season after winning the first game of a match. The team is now 15-2 when winning the first game.

Five Broncos recorded double figures in the match including Potter, Alyssa Lantz (15), Cassie Perret (12), Megan Johnston (12) and Becky Biniek (10). Santa Clara hit .284 in the contest while limiting the Hornets to a .184 mark. Potter''s 26 kills also came with 15 digs while Cindy Hirsch led all players with 20 digs.

Sacramento State was led by senior Jayme Wright, who tallied a team-high 15 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Sandra Bandimere (13 kills) and junior Kazmiera Imrie (10 kills) also chipped in. Three Hornets notched at least four blocks, led by freshman Shannon Arts'' six. Junior Lisa Beauchene finished with five kills, 35 assists, 11 digs and four blocks.

Santa Clara held a distinct advantage over the Hornets in kills (77-51), assists (74-49) and digs (78-63).

After recording seven team blocks in the first game, Sacramento State could muster just one block, one block and three blocks, respectively, in games 2-4.

Sacramento State controlled the first game as the team never trailed by anything more than one point. The Hornets opened up their largest lead of the game at 27-19, before eventually winning, 30-22. Sacramento State hit .308 in the game while limiting Santa Clara to a .065 mark. Wright led the Hornets with five kills, eight digs and a .556 hitting percentage (5-0-9) while Bandimere tallied four kills. Sacramento State dominated at the net, outblocking Santa Clara, 7.0-1.0.

Santa Clara was in control throughout game two as the Hornets held just two brief leads at 1-0 and 3-2. Santa Clara used a 4-0 run to open up a 10-5 lead as the Hornets could get no closer than within two points of the Bronco lead the rest of the way. Santa Clara''s largest lead was 13 points, the same amount by which they won the game. SCU hit a match-high .390, led by Lantz''s six kills.

The Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game three before Sacramento State finally drew even at 21-21, and eventually took a brief 22-21 lead. With the score tied at 25-25, Santa Clara ran off five of the game''s final seven points. Potter led all players with nine kills as the Broncos hit .340 in the frame.

In the fourth frame, Santa Clara used a 7-0 run to open up a 13-6 lead and never looked back from there. The Hornets drew to within six points at 13-7, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Sacramento State returns to action this Friday, Nov. 1, as the team opens up a four-match homestand against Big Sky Conference-foe Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. inside Hornet Gym. The Hornets also face Saint Mary''s (Nov. 5), Montana (Nov. 7) and Montana State (Nov. 9) at home over the next two weeks.
