VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO WEBER STATE IN THREE

10/25/2002

Junior Lisa Beauchene
OGDEN, Utah – Three Wildcats recorded double-doubles, led by Holly Montano’s 16 kills and 11 digs, as Weber State defeated Sacramento State, 3-0 (32-30, 30-12, 30-17), in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Friday evening at the Dee Events Center.

With the victory, Weber State improved its record to 14-8 overall and 5-3 in the Big Sky. The Wildcats are now 8-2 at home this season and have defeated the Hornets in Ogden, Utah, each of the last three years. Sacramento State had its three-match winning streak snapped while falling to 16-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Hornets are now 5-4 on the road this season, including 2-2 against conference opponents.

The Hornets’ 12 points scored in the second frame was the lowest amount the team has scored in a game this season. Of Sacramento State’s eight losses this year, seven have resulted in three-game sweeps.

Besides Montano, Stephanie Metcalf (14 kills, 12 digs) and Stephanie Kropushek (12 kills, 14 digs) also tallied double-doubles. Weber State dominated the match, holding the advantage over the Hornets in kills (56-38), assists (51-32) and hitting percentage (.336-.138). The Wildcats’ hitting percentage marked the first time all season that Sacramento State has allowed an opponent to hit above .300. The Hornets’ .138 mark was the team’s sixth-lowest output of the season.

For just the second time this season, no Hornet recorded double-figure kills (the other time coming against Nevada). Junior Lisa Beauchene led Sacramento State with nine kills, a .500 hitting percentage (9-1-16), 26 assists and seven digs. Senior Jayme Wright (seven kills and a team-leading 13 digs), junior Kazmiera Imrie (six kills) and sophomore Sandra Bandimere (six kills) also chipped in.

The Hornets hit .224, .125 and .048, respectively, in games one through three. Conversely, Weber State had four players hit at least .333, led by Montano’s .519 mark (16-2-27).

Sacramento State’s loss coupled with Eastern Washington’s 3-0 victory over Montana State moves the Hornets back into second place, one game behind Eastern Washington (7-1).

Sacramento State returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 26) as the team takes on Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, at 3 p.m. PDT. The Hornets have defeated the Bengals 11-consecutive times over the last six years.
