10/4/2002

Sophomore Emily Wilson
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Sophomores Sandra Bandimere (17 kills) and Emily Wilson (career-high 13 kills) led Sacramento State to a 3-1 (32-30, 22-30, 30-12, 30-19) victory over Northern Arizona in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Friday evening at the Rolle Activity Center.

With the victory, Sacramento State remains undefeated in conference play as the team improved to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in the Big Sky. The Hornets have now won four of their last five matches and have defeated Northern Arizona nine of the last 11 times the two teams have met. The Lumberjacks, who opened conference play by defeating both Weber State and Idaho State at home last week, dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky.

Bandimere, who also had four blocks and a .286 hitting percentage (17-5-42) in the match, has led the team in kills in five of the last six contests. Wilson’s career-high 13 kills also came with a team-high six blocks and a season-high .391 hitting percentage as the middle hitter committed just four errors in 23 total attacks. Senior Jayme Wright chipped in 10 kills and 14 digs to round out the Hornet threesome in double-figure kills.

A total of five Hornets finished with double figures in digs including Wright, freshman Mallory Hook (career-high 23), juniors Lisa Beauchene (17) and Ali Mathewson (career-high 13), and sophomore Stephanie Gamst (10). Sacramento State’s 93 digs during the match was the team’s second-best output of the season. The Hornets dominated the contest in nearly every statistical category including kills (65-43), assists (60-40), digs (93-71) and service aces (11-4). Beauchene finished with four aces while Mathewson tallied three.

The Hornets’ 30-12 victory in game three was the second-best mark of the season as the team beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 30-11, in game three of Sacramento State’s victory on Sept. 6.

Northern Arizona had one player finish with double figures in kills (Ellie Butterfield’s 11) and was limited to an average of just 10.75 kills per game. Megan Van Anda led the Lumberjacks with 19 digs.

Sacramento State returns to action next week as the team takes on both Montana State and Montana on the road. The Hornets face the Bobcats in Bozeman, Mont., on Friday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. PDT, and the Grizzlies in Missoula, Mont., on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m. PDT.

NOTES -- Gamst finished with a career-high nine kills. Over the last three matches, she has combined for 23 kills...junior Kazmiera Imrie finished with seven kills, marking just the fourth time in her last 11 matches she did not finish with double-figure kills...the Hornets have now won 10 of their last 11 regular season conference matches dating back to last season...not only did Beauchene earn Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors last week, she also garnered Hornet Bookstore Athlete of the Week honors...Sacramento State has just 13 regular-season matches remaining on the schedule, seven of which are on the road...head coach Debby Colberg picked up her 684th career win tonight and is now 16 shy of the 700-win plateau, a milestone only five active Div. I coaches have achieved.
