SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sophomore Sandra Bandimere led all players with a career-high 21 kills and sophomore Emily Wilson recorded career highs in both kills (10) and blocks (eight) to lead the Sacramento State volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-22, 30-21, 28-30, 30-25) victory over San Jose State Tuesday night at the Events Center.With the win, Sacramento State snapped a two-match losing streak and improved to 8-3 overall. San Jose State, which had won three of its last four, dropped to 5-5. The Hornets have now won four of the last five meetings between the two teams dating back to 1995. Tuesday''s match, which was San Jose State''s home opener, marked the first Spartan loss in the Event Center since falling to Hawai''i in five games on Oct. 18 of last season.
The Hornets had six players finish with at least seven kills including junior Kazmiera Imrie (11 kills, eight digs and eight blocks), junior Lisa Beauchene (eight kills, 47 assists, 16 digs and six blocks), senior Jayme Wright (seven kills and a match-best 20 digs) and senior Loretta Coffman (seven kills and six blocks). Junior Olivia Thomas added 10 digs.
Sacramento State hit .222 for the match while limiting San Jose State to a .120 mark. Fran Pozzi (16), Stephanie Pascucci (15) and Kimberly Noble (12) each recorded double figures in kills for the Spartans.
In the first game, the Hornets used an 11-2 run to extend a 13-10 lead to a commanding 24-12 advantage. The Spartans would get no closer than within seven points of Sacramento State''s lead the rest of the way. Bandimere and Wilson led all players with five kills in the frame as the Hornets hit .341 compared to San Jose State''s mark of .089.
In game two, Sacramento State used a 9-5 run to take a 20-15 lead, and closed the frame winning six of the final seven points. Bandimere and Imrie each tallied four kills as the Hornets committed just five attack errors during the entire game. Conversely, San Jose State committed 11 errors in 46 total attacks while hitting just .087.
In the third game, San Jose State erased a 23-19 deficit by winning 11 of the next 16 points to claim the 30-28 victory. The Hornets hit just .088 in the game while the Spartans hit .160. San Jose State did not hold a lead during the entire game until taking a 26-25 lead late in the frame. Bandimere tallied seven of the team''s 14 kills in the frame.
In game four, the Hornets erased a 20-19 deficit by rallying off 11 of the game''s final 16 points. Sacramento State hit .267 while committing just three attack errors during the entire game.
Sacramento State returns to action later this week as the team participates in the Fresno State Quadrangular Friday-Saturday, Sept. 20-21. The Hornets face UNLV on Friday at 5 p.m. before taking on San Diego (11 a.m.) and host Fresno State (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday. The match against UNLV will mark the first time ever the two teams have met. All matches will be played at the North Gym in Fresno, Calif.
NOTES -- Senior Jayme Wright tweaked her left knee midway through the second game before returning to play in the third and fourth frames...with the victory, Sacramento State avoided its first three-match losing streak since the 1998 season...with seven kills, Wright is now 31 short (969) of the 1,000 kill plateau. She went over the 1,000 career digs mark last week...Bandimere has now recorded at least 14 kills and has led the team in that category in three of her last four matches...Imrie has recorded double figures in kills in a team-best eight matches.
