RENO, Nev. – Michelle More led all players with 20 kills while Christine Harms added 13 kills to lead Nevada to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-26) victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the Nevada Invitational Friday evening at the Virginia Street Gym.Nevada won its sixth-consecutive match while improving to 6-1 on the season. Sacramento State, which had won seven in a row and hadn''t lost since Aug. 30, dropped to 7-2. Sacramento State had entered the match with a 28-6 all-time record against Nevada, including a four-game victory in Sacramento last season.
Nevada hit .293 in the match, the highest output by a Hornet opponent this season. Four Wolf Pack players hit at least .360, including More who finished hitting .471 (20-4-34). Conversely, Sacramento State hit a season-low .082. Nevada also held a distinct advantage in kills (58-34), digs (52-31) and team blocks (10.0-8.5). Sacramento State hit .077, .115 and .032, in games one through three, respectively.
Sacramento State was led by senior Jayme Wright, who finished with a team-best nine kills and nine digs. Junior Kazmiera Imrie, senior Loretta Coffman and sophomore Emily Wilson each finished with five kills for the Hornets.
In the first game, Nevada used a late 5-0 run to take a commanding 27-20 lead. The Hornets would get no closer than within three points of the Wolf Pack lead the rest of the way. After the Hornets went on a 6-1 run to close within, 22-20, Nevada''s Salaia Salavea served out five-straight points to give Nevada the big advantage. Nevada led from start to finish in the game as More led all players with six kills.
With Nevada leading, 18-17, in the second game, the Wolf Pack went on a 5-0 run to open up a 23-17 lead. Jill Couwenhoven served all five points, two of which came on aces. The Hornets would get no closer than within four points of Nevada''s lead the rest of the game. More dominated as she finished the game with eight kills and a .467 hitting percentage (8-1-15). Sacramento State, which hit just .115 in the frame, was led by Wright''s five kills.
With the score tied at 26-26 in the third game, Nevada rallied off the final four points of the game and match on a Salavea kill, a More kill, a Hornet hitting error and a Nevada block, respectively. The Hornets'' only lead of the game was at 1-0 as Nevada never trailed the rest of the way.
Sacramento State returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 14) as it faces Cal State Northridge in the second and final round of the tournament at noon.
