VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MONTANA STATE, HAS ITS NINE-MATCH CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK SNAPPED
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Falin Schaefer recorded 23 kills, 15 digs and nine blocks and Anne Watts added 15 kills and 13 digs to lead Montana State to a 3-1 (30-19, 30-16, 25-30, 30-27) victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference volleyball matchup Saturday evening in Shroyer Gym.With the loss, the Hornets had their nine-match conference winning streak snapped as the team fell to 17-8 overall and 10-2 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State’s loss coupled with Eastern Washington’s (9-3) win tonight moves the Eagles to within one game of the Hornets in the Big Sky standings with two matches to play. The Hornets host Eastern Washington next Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. A victory on Friday would give Sacramento State its fifth-consecutive Big Sky regular season title.
Montana State improved to 16-6 overall and 7-6 in the conference with tonight’s win.
Junior Jayme Wright led the Hornets with 17 kills and 10 digs while sophomore Lisa Beauchene finished with nine kills, 46 assists and a team-high 15 digs. Senior Tasman Dwyer added 13 kills and four blocks as Sacramento State hit just .135 for the match, its third-worst output of the season. Conversely, Montana State hit .286 and badly outblocked the Hornets, 18.5-10.5.
Four Bobcats recorded at least six blocks comprising Karin Lundqvist (10 blocks), Schaefer, Julia Handwerk (eight blocks) and Aimee Halyk (six blocks). In games one, two and four, Montana State hit .351, .478 and .289, respectively, all Bobcats victories.
Beauchene missed her fourth triple-double of the season by one kill, marking the third time she has missed a triple-double by two kills or less. Junior Kazmiera Imrie finished with six kills, seven digs and a team-high five blocks.
The Hornets not only had their nine-match conference winning streak snapped, the team had also won 27-consecutive games in conference play until tonight’s loss.
Sacramento State closes its season with two home matches next week against Eastern Washington (Friday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m.) and Portland State (Saturday, Nov. 10, 4 p.m.). Friday’s match is Senior Night as Alison Gahr, Tasman Dwyer and Kelly Voeltz will be honored for their contributions to the program.
