SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior
Desiree Hoyum paced all players with eight kills to lead Sacramento State to a three-game sweep (25-13, 25-20, 25-14) of Louisiana-Monroe in the fourth and final round of the CenturyTel Volleyball Premier late Saturday afternoon at the Strahan Coliseum.
With the victory, Sacramento State (2-2) concludes the tournament with a 2-2 record, having defeated Texas-Pan American yesterday. The team’s losses came to Miami (yesterday) and tournament host Texas State earlier today.
Hornet sophomore
Maddison Thivierge finished the tournament with averages of 2.64 kills and 1.00 blocks per game, to go along with a .313 hitting percentage (37-11-83). Freshman
Eryn Kirby averaged 2.21 kills and 1.93 digs per game, and senior
Katie Van Der Wende led the team with 4.07 digs per game during the tournament. Van Der Wende represented the Hornets on the all-tournament team.
In this afternoon’s match, Sacramento State never trailed by anything more than one point the entire way while posting its second three-set sweep of the season.
Hoyum’s eight kills accompanied a .333 hitting percentage (8-1-21) and a team-high nine digs. Thivierge finished with six kills, three blocks and a .556 hitting percentage, and senior setter
Rose Burke had four kills, 20 assists, an ace and a .286 hitting percentage. Kirby added a season-high five of the Hornets’ 10 aces.
The Hornets limited Louisiana-Monroe to a -.025 hitting percentage as ULM more errors (19) than kills (17). Conversely, Sacramento State hit .239. No Louisiana-Monroe player had more than five kills.
Six different Hornets had at least four kills, comprised of Hoyum (8), Thivierge (6), Kirby (5),
Shannon Wilson (5), Burke (4) and
Brittany Ferguson (4).
The Hornets return to action next week they host the Sacramento State Invitational. The Hornets play Cal State Northridge on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and both San Jose State (12:30 p.m.) and Saint Mary’s (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
