VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MIAMI IN SECOND ROUND OF CENTURYTEL PREMIER
8/29/2008
SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Miami’s Lane Carico (12) and Genny Mayhew (10) combined for 22 kills to lead the Hurricanes to a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) over Sacramento State in the second round of the CenturyTel Volleyball Premier Friday afternoon at the Strahan Coliseum.
With the loss, the Hornets dropped to 1-1 at the season opening two-day tournament, having defeated Texas-Pan American, 3-0, earlier today. Sacramento State concludes tourney play tomorrow against host Texas State (9 a.m. PST) and Louisiana-Monroe (3 p.m. PST). The match was the first of the season for Miami, which returns later tonight to face host Texas State.
Sacramento State hit just .058 in the match with 28 kills and 21 errors in 120 attacks. In fact, only one Hornet with more than one kill hit better than .138 – freshman Kelsey Elston finished with five kills and a .250 hitting percentage. Maddison Thivierge and Eryn Kirby each had seven kills to lead the Hornets while Desiree Hoyum and Elson had five. Those four combined for 24 of the team’s 28 kills.
Senior Katie Van Der Wende led the Hornets with 16 digs and three aces, while junior Melissa Melcher added 10 digs. Freshman Olivia Moss led the team with three blocks.
For Miami, Carico and Mayhew were the only players in the match with double figures in kills. After the Hornets pulled to within, 23-22, in the third set, Mayhew strung together back-to-back kills to put the set and match away.
Miami held the advantage over Sacramento State in nearly every statistical category, including kills (41-28), hitting percentage (.193-.058), assists (35-27), digs (59-54) and team blocks (9.0-5.0).
