VOLLEYBALL SQUANDERS 2-1 LEAD AND FALLS IN FIVE TO CS BAKERSFIELD

9/20/2008

DAVIS, Calif. -- Despite a career-high 12 kills and four blocks from Sacramento State freshman middle hitter Olivia Moss, Cal State Bakersfield erased a 2-1 set difference to defeat the Hornets, 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 25-27, 25-16, 15-8), in the second round of the Aggie Invite Saturday morning at The Pavilion.

With the victory, Cal State Bakersfield improved to 2-0 at the tournament, and 7-6 overall. Sacramento State dropped its ninth consecutive match and fell to 2-11 overall and 0-2 at the tournament. The Hornets will play their final match of the tourney tonight against Causeway rival and tournament host UC Davis. Sacramento State has won 12 straight meetings against the Aggies dating back to 1993.

Sacramento State hit just .162 during the match while Cal State Bakersfield hit .249. In addition, Bakersfield took advantage of 17 Hornet service errors. The Roadrunners received a match-high 18 kills, and a .450 hitting percentage from Sarah Norman, while Rosemary Stribling (15) and Alysia Baker (10) also had double-figure kills for Cal State Bakersfield.

In the fifth and decisive set, Cal State Bakersfield never trailed, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Sacramento State would get no closer than within three points if the CSB lead the rest of the way. The Roadrunners hit .353 in the fifth set, while the Hornets were held to a .000 hitting percentage (five kills and five errors in 21 attacks).

After the two teams split the first two sets, the Hornets were able to erase a 25-24 deficit in the third after winning the final three points on a bad Bakersfield set, a kill from freshman Kelsey Elston and a solo block from Desiree Hoyum, respectively. However, the Roadrunners were able to win the final two sets with relative ease.

For Sacramento State, Moss posted career highs in kills (12), blocks (4) and hitting percentage (.474). The freshman from Monument, Colo., had just three errors in 19 attacks. Joining Moss with double-figure kills for the Hornets was senior rightside hitter Brittany Ferguson who finished with 11.

Five different Hornets had double figures in digs, comprised of seniors Katie Van Der Wende (19) and Rose Burke (19), sophomore Maddison Thivierge (14), Ferguson (13) and Hoyum (12). Burke also had 40 assists and two blocks, Elston had seven kills and two blocks, and Thivierge added nine kills.
