HAUPT AND FRANZ COMBINE TO LEAD VOLLEYBALL TO SWEEP OF IDAHO STATE

10/8/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sophomore middle hitters Michelle Franz (10) and Lindsay Haupt (10) combined for 20 kills and a .529 hitting percentage to lead Sacramento State to a three-game sweep (30-17, 30-18, 30-19) of Idaho State in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.

Haupt’s 10 kills accompanied a .500 hitting percentage (10-0-20) and a match-high six blocks while Franz had 10 kills, a .571 hitting percentage (10-2-14), two blocks and a career-high three service aces. The pair led a Sacramento State offensive attack that included five Hornets with at least seven kills, and a .275 hitting percentage as a team.

With the victory, Sacramento State (13-7, 5-1) strengthened its hold atop the Big Sky standings as every other conference team has at least two Big Sky losses. The Hornets have won 12 of their last 14 matches while winning 44-consecutive regular-season home matches against Big Sky opposition (a streak which dates back to the 1999 season). In addition, the Hornets improved to 7-1 at home this season and have won each of their last seven matches in the friendly confines.

With the loss, Idaho State, which was playing without Felice Yocopis and Zoe Beltz because of injury, dropped to 8-11 overall and 2-3 in the Big Sky. The Bengals hit just .033 as a team and Sacramento State has limited eight-consecutive opponents to hitting percentages below .200.

In a match which lasted just one hour, 18 minutes, Sacramento State’s Shannon Arts (nine kills, .312 hitting percentage, three blocks), Atlee Hubbard (eight kills, 13 digs, two blocks), Jennifer Ferguson (seven kills, 11 digs, three blocks), Mallory Hook (match-high 14 digs) and Kristin Lutes (11 digs) all made big contributions. Senior setter Natalie Melcher (two kills, 28 assists, six digs) played the first two games while freshman setter Rose Burke (13 assists, two digs) played the final game.

The Hornets dominated the match in every statistical category, including kills (50-28), assists (44-27), aces (12-2), digs (67-46) and team blocks (9.0-6.0). Four Hornets had at least two aces, including a career-high three from Lutes and a career-high tying two from junior Leah Klemenhagen.

Idaho State was led by Karli Maughan’s eight kills and five blocks, while Nikki Havens tallied a team-high 11 digs.

Idaho State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game, but Sacramento State responded with an 11-2 run and never looked back. The Hornets hit .316 (led by Ferguson’s five kills) in the game while Idaho State hit just .024 (8-7-41).

In game two, the Hornets led from start to finish, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and never leading by anything less than two points the rest of the way. Both Franz and Hubbard had four kills in the frame while Idaho State hit for a negative percentage (-.024).

The Bengals jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the third game, but the Hornets quickly responded with a 5-0 run to tie the frame at 6-6. Sacramento State took control midway through the game when Lutes served three-consecutive aces and Klemenhagen added two straight a little later to give the Hornets a 23-13 insurmountable lead.

Sacramento State resumes its season long four-match homestand with a pair of non-conference matches against Bucknell (Sunday, Oct. 9, 2 p.m.) and UC Davis (Wednesday, Oct. 12, 7 p.m.). At the conclusion of the homestand, the Hornets will play seven of their final 10 regular-season matches on the road.
