SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Atlee Hubbard had a career-high 26 kills and sophomore Lindsay Haupt added 10 kills and a match-high .500 hitting percentage to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 (30-14, 30-25, 29-31, 32-30) victory over Weber State in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Thursday evening at the Hornets Nest.Playing the first of a season-long four match homestand, Sacramento State won its 43rd-consecutive regular-season match at home against a Big Sky opponent (a streak which dates back to the 1999 season).
The Hornets remain in first place atop the Big Sky standings with a 12-7 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the conference. With the loss, Weber State dropped to 7-10 and 2-2 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State is now 9-0 all-time against Weber State at home in a series which dates back to the 1991 season.
Hubbard’s 26 kills continued a streak in which the Menlo Park, Calif., native has now recorded at least 20 kills in four of her last seven matches. In addition, Hubbard’s .295 hitting percentage was a season high and came with 13 digs as well. Joining Hubbard and Haupt with double figures in kills for the Hornets were sophomore Jennifer Ferguson (13 kills, 17 digs) and senior Shannon Arts (11 kills, six blocks). Haupt’s 10 kills came with just one error in 18 attempts.
Sophomore Michelle Franz posted a career-high 10 blocks and senior setter Natalie Melcher finished with six. After hitting .600 (20-2-30) in the first game, the Hornets struggled the rest of the way, hitting .016, .091 and .255, respectively, in games two through four.
Weber State, which hit .065 in game one and -.039 in game two, began to gain confidence in the third game. The Wildcats led the majority of the third frame, and broke a 29-29 tie with kills from Melissa Nielsen and Leah Burmeister, respectively.
In the fourth game, Weber State took a 27-24 lead on a kill from Kolbie Murphy. However, the Hornets stormed back with a 4-0 run capped off by a Haupt kill to reclaim the lead at 28-27. Both teams then exchanged points and Weber State saved two match points before a kill by the Wildcats’ Chelsea Bair knotted things at 30-30. A crucial service error by Bair gave the Hornets a 31-30 lead and Hubbard capped things off with her 26th kill of the match to give the Hornets their 12th victory.
Sacramento State’s Mallory Hook finished with a team-high 25 digs, one shy of her career high while Hubbard, Ferguson, Melcher (12) and junior Kristin Lutes (16) also tallied double figures in digs. The Hornets dominated the match statistically, leading Weber State in kills (69-50), hitting percentage (.191-.124), assists (61-48) and digs (90-70).
The Wildcats were led by Bair’s 18 kills and nine digs, while Murphy finished with 10 kills, Brittney Bisaillon 11 blocks and Keelee Kap 25 digs.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, as the team hosts Idaho State at 1 p.m. The Hornets have never lost to the Bengals at home (9-0) and own a 17-2 record in the all-time series. Sacramento State will also play non-conference matches against Bucknell on Sunday, Oct. 9 (2 p.m.) and UC Davis on Wednesday, Oct. 12 (7 p.m.).
