SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- On a night when the 1980 and 1981 national championship Sacramento State volleyball squads were honored, the current edition of the Hornets also played their best, sweeping past Montana, 3-0 (30-21, 30-16, 30-20), in a Big Sky Conference match Saturday evening at the Hornets Nest.With the victory, Sacramento State won for the ninth time in its last 10 matches, while improving to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the Big Sky. The Hornets improved to 5-1 at home this year, and have now won 42-consecutive regular-season matches at home against Big Sky competition (a streak which dates back to 1999). Montana has now lost three of its last four while dropping to 10-6 overall and 0-2 in the Big Sky.
In between games two and three of tonight’s match, both the 1980 and 1981 Sacramento State national championship squads were honored after being inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame Friday evening. The 1980 and 1981 Hornet squads remain the only teams at Sacramento State to win back-to-back national championships.
In tonight’s match, junior Atlee Hubbard led the Hornets in both kills (14) and digs (18) while sophomores Jennifer Ferguson (10 kills, eight digs) and Lindsay Haupt (10 kills, .429 hitting percentage and six blocks) also chipped in double-figure kills.
As a team, Sacramento State recorded a season-best .324 hitting percentage, and three players hit better than .420 comprised of senior Shannon Arts (nine kills and a career-high .692 hitting percentage), sophomore Michelle Franz (nine kills, .529 hitting percentage and four blocks) and Haupt. Senior setter Natalie Melcher tallied 43 assists, nine digs and a team-high seven blocks.
Hubbard, who tallied eight of her 14 kills in the first game, became the first Hornet other than Kristin Lutes to lead the team in digs this season. Lutes finished with 16 (two less than Hubbard) and Mallory Hook added 10 to round out the three Hornets with double-figure digs.
Montana, which hit just .121 and had 16 less kills than Sacramento State (55-39), was led by Claudia Houle’s 13 kills and 14 digs. Jackie White also added a match-high 24 digs for the Grizzlies.
The Hornets return to action next week for two more conference matches as the team travels to Portland State (Friday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m.) and Eastern Washington (Saturday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m.).
