CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Ana Yartseva had a team-high 11 kills and ninth-ranked Louisville outblocked Sacramento State, 14-0, as the Cardinals swept the Hornets, 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-18) in the second round of the Orange and Green Volleyball Challenge Saturday morning at the Knight Complex.With the victory, Louisville, who is the highest ranked opponent the Hornets have faced this year, improved to a perfect 8-0 and 2-0 at the tournament. Sacramento State had its five-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 1-1 at the tournament and 6-6 overall. The Hornets wrap up tournament play this afternoon against Michigan State at 2 p.m. PST.
Sacramento State kept the match close in every statistical category except blocks where Louisville dominated the contest, including a match-high 10 from Yartseva. In fact, the Hornets had posted at least nine team blocks in six-consecutive matches before being held to zero in today’s contest.
Louisville’s offensive attack, which includes players from the Ukraine, Russia and China, was too much for the Hornets as the Cardinals hit .333 as a team. Yartseva (.421) was one of four Louisville players to hit at least .400, including Jennifer Hoffman (seven kills, .467), Stephanie Marsh (seven kills, .462 and four blocks) and Elena Pilnikova (nine kills, .412 and 31 assists). Lena Ustymenko led the Cardinals with 16 digs and three aces.
Senior Shannon Arts led the Hornets with 12 kills and sophomore Lindsay Haupt chipped in 11 kills. Sophomore Michelle Franz continued to be the Hornets’ most consistent player as the Carmichael, Calif., native had seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Franz has now hit at least .350 in four-straight matches and five of her last six.
Sophomore Jennifer Ferguson posted a season-best eight kills to go along with 11 digs. Juniors Atlee Hubbard and Kristin Lutes each shared the team lead with 16 digs.
Sacramento State’s largest lead of the match was at 6-3 in the first game, and Louisville led from start to finish in the third frame.
