OGDEN, Utah -- Senior Sandra Bandimere had a career-high tying 27 kills and senior Stephanie Gamst added seven kills, 61 assists, 10 digs and four blocks as Sacramento State defeated Weber State, 3-2 (30-21, 30-27, 29-31, 28-30, 15-9) in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Friday evening at the Dee Events Center.With the victory, Sacramento State won its fourth match in a row while improving to 15-5 overall and 5-1 in the Big Sky. The Hornets, who have now defeated Weber State just two times in the last five years in Ogden, Utah, conclude the brief road trip tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 10) against Idaho State at 6 p.m. PDT. The Hornets’ five-game victory was their first since last season as the team had been 1-7 in five gamers over the last two years prior to tonight’s victory.
Sacramento State’s 15-5 record is the team’s best mark after 20 matches since the 2001 squad also posted a 15-5 mark. With the loss, Weber State dropped its eighth in a row while falling to 2-18 and 1-5 in the conference.
Bandimere’s 27 kills came on a career-high 75 attacks as the team captain took over 32 percent of Sacramento State’s total swings as a team (233). Bandimere also had 20 digs, marking her fifth 20-plus digs match of the season and her first since Sept. 18 (against San Jose State).
Gamst, who was just named Big Sky Player of the Week, hit a team-high .467 with zero errors in 15 total attempts as the setter’s 61 assists tied a career high (set earlier this season against Saint Mary’s). Sacramento State had nine more kills than Weber State (77-68), but narrowly edged the Wildcats in hitting percentage (.159-.156) and digs (97-96). Joining Bandimere with double figures in kills for the Hornets were junior Shannon Arts (11, one shy of her season high) and sophomore Shannon Roland (10, her second match this season with at least 10 kills).
Five Hornets had double figures in digs, comprised of Bandimere, Gamst, sophomore Kristin Lutes (match-high 25), junior Mallory Hook (12) and senior Emily Wilson (career-high 11). Lutes’ 25 digs were her second-largest output of the season. Wilson also had six kills, two aces and six blocks. Freshman Lindsay Haupt continued to play well, adding eight kills and a team-best seven blocks.
Weber State was paced by Lindsay Harris, who tallied team highs in kills (18) and blocks (12). Kaylianne Valenzuela led the Wildcats with 22 digs.
Sacramento State was in control each of the first two games before Weber State squeaked out both games three and four. The Hornets jumped out to a 13-3 lead in game five and cruised for the 15-9 victory.
Sacramento State junior Natalie Melcher sat out tonight''s match and will miss Saturday''s match against Idaho State as well.
After Saturday’s match at Idaho State, Sacramento State hosts Pacific on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and Northern Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 23. The match against Pacific is one of just two non-conference opponents (Oct. 26 at UC Davis) remaining on the Hornets’ regular-season schedule.
