SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Tournament Most Valuable Player Sandra Bandimere tallied 17 kills, 12 digs and six blocks to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-13) victory over Oregon in the fourth and final round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational Saturday night at the Hornets Nest.With the win over Oregon, the Hornets posted a perfect 4-0 record and did not drop a game during the entire tournament. Sacramento State swept teams from the Pac-10 Conference (Oregon), the Big East Conference (Seton Hall), Western Athletic Conference (San Jose State) and Conference USA (Charlotte). In fact, no team scored more than 26 points in any of the Hornets’ 12 games during the tournament.
With four-consecutive victories, the Hornets moved to 10-3 overall this season, the team’s best start since the 1995 squad began the year with a 12-1 record. Bandimere received her second tournament MVP award this year (also received the honor at the Nanook Volleyball Classic) while seniors Stephanie Gamst and Emily Wilson joined Bandimere on the Sacramento State Invitational all-tournament team.
Bandimere, who moved into 10th place on Sacramento State’s all-time list with 1,143 career kills, posted averages of 4.67 kills and 4.33 digs per game over the four tournament matches. Wilson hit a team-best .478 during the tournament as the senior had 35 kills with just three errors in 67 total attempts. Gamst dished out 12.50 assists and 3.08 digs per game.
In the match against Oregon, Wilson hit a career-high .611 as the middle hitter had 11 kills without an error in 18 total attacks. Wilson also had a match-high seven blocks and now leads the Hornets this season in hitting percentage (.342) and blocks (1.58 per game).
Sacramento State dominated Oregon from start to finish, outpointing the Ducks in kills (51-39), hitting percentage (.360-.102), assists (49-33), digs (55-41) and total blocks (11-6). The Hornets have now allowed just two opponents to hit above .200 this season.
Four Hornets had at least four blocks comprised of Wilson, Bandimere, and juniors Shannon Arts (four) and Natalie Melcher (four).
Sacramento State closes its five-match homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 21, as the team hosts Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. The Hornets have yet to drop a game at home this season, sweeping all five of their opponents on the home floor.
