SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Sandra Bandimere led all players with 12 kills and 12 digs while sophomore Atlee Hubbard also tallied 12 kills to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 (30-12, 30-18, 30-19) victory over Seton Hall in the second round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational Friday evening at the Hornets Nest.With the win, Sacramento State, which swept Charlotte earlier in the day, improved to 2-0 at the tournament and 8-3 this season. Seton Hall dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the tournament with the loss. Through the first day of action, San Jose State is 2-0, Oregon is 1-1 and Charlotte is 0-2. Five more matches will be played tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 17) beginning at 9 a.m. The Hornets will play at 11:30 a.m. (against San Jose State) and 7:30 p.m. (against Oregon).
The Hornets dominated Seton Hall from start to finish as the team had more kills (52-25), assists (46-24) and service aces (6-0). In fact, Sacramento State jumped out to a 16-2 lead in game one and Bandimere finished the frame with more kills than the entire Seton Hall squad (6-5).
Sacramento State hit .295 and limited Seton Hall to a -.018 hitting percentage. The Hornets had five players with at least a .333 hitting percentage, comprised of Hubbard (.440), senior Emily Wilson (nine kills, .533), junior Shannon Arts (eight kills, .412), sophomore Shannon Roland (.375) and senior Jackie Coudert (.333). The Hornets also had seven team blocks, led by Natalie Melcher’s team-best five.
Seton Hall had no player with more than five kills as the team had more errors (27) than kills (25) in 111 total attacks.
Of Sacramento State’s eight victories this season, six have now been three-game sweeps. The team’s 8-3 start marks the best since the 2002 squad also began the season with eight victories in its first 11 matches.
