SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Freshman Lindsay Haupt tallied a career-high 11 kills to go along with a .556 hitting percentage as the Hornets defeated Charlotte, 3-0 (30-26, 30-24, 30-22), in the first round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational Friday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.Sacramento State, which hosts Seton Hall tonight at 7:30 p.m., improved to 7-3 overall this season and 1-0 at the tournament. The Hornets will also play San Jose State (11:30 a.m.) and Oregon (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 18.
Haupt’s 11 kills came with just one error in 18 total attacks as three Hornets had at least seven kills, including seniors Sandra Bandimere (seven kills and seven digs) and Emily Wilson (seven kills, a .500 hitting percentage and a match-high three blocks). The Hornets hit .223 in the match and took advantage of 15 service errors by the 49ers.
With the exception of a brief 4-3 deficit early in game one, the Hornets never trailed during the entire match as Sacramento State was comfortably ahead most of the way. The two teams combined for 15 service aces and 26 service errors.
Senior Mallory Hook led the Hornets with nine digs while senior Stephanie Gamst finished with 31 assists, two aces and eight digs.
Charlotte was led by Abbey Szlanfucht’s 13 kills and 10 digs, while Holly Kreyling finished with a match-best 13 digs. The 49ers hit just .176 in the match as the Hornets have now held all but two opponents to hitting percentage below .200 this season.
