RENO, Nev. -- Four Nevada players – including Salaia Salavea''s match-high 22 kills and .528 hitting percentage – recorded double figures in kills to lead the Wolf Pack to 3-1 (30-21, 30-27, 27-30, 30-25) victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at the Virginia Street Gym.With the win, Nevada improved to 5-2 and has now won four-straight matches. In addition, the Wolf Pack have defeated the Hornets four-consecutive times in Reno, Nev. (1998, 2000, 2002). Sacramento State, which has still won six of its last eight matches, dropped to 6-3 with the loss. The Hornets, who still own a 29-8 advantage in the series with Nevada, have now played eight of their first nine matches of the season away from home.
Nevada hit .323 against the Hornets, the highest mark for a Sacramento State opponent this season. Salavea, Carly Sorensen (15), Karen Adams (14) and Karly Sipherd (11) combined for 62 of the team''s 77 kills. Salavea had just three errors in 36 attempts, while Sipherd (.304) and Sorensen (.303) also hit above .300.
Sacramento State tallied a season-low 43 digs as Nevada hit at least .289 in every game but the second. The Hornets, who hit .267, including a career-high .550 from junior Natalie Melcher, were outscored in kills (77-62), assists (70-56), service aces (11-2) and digs (55-43).
Senior Sandra Bandimere led the Hornets in kills for the seventh time this season as the team captain finished with 18. Melcher had a career-high 12 kills – committing just one error in 20 attacks – to go along with six blocks. Senior Emily Wilson added 10 kills, a .391 hitting percentage (10-1-23) and a match-high eight blocks.
Hornet sophomore Shannon Roland recorded eight kills and a .357 hitting percentage (8-3-14) as the outside hitter has now combined for a .364 hitting percentage over her last three matches. The Hornets had just two players with double figures in digs, led by sophomore Kristin Lutes with 13.
Sacramento State returns to action this Friday-Saturday, Sept. 17-18, as the Hornets host the five-team Sacramento State Invitational. During the 10-match tournament which lasts all day Friday and Saturday, the Hornets will take on Charlotte (2 p.m.) and Seton Hall (7:30 p.m.) on Friday, and San Jose State (11:30 a.m.) and Oregon (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
