SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Five Hornets had double figures in digs, led by senior Sandra Bandimere (career-high 26), and sophomores Kristin Lutes (24) and Atlee Hubbard (18) as Sacramento State earned a hard-fought 3-1 (32-30, 24-30, 30-16, 31-29) victory over Fresno State in the third and final round of the Cal Poly Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening at Mott Gym.With the victory, Sacramento State finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and a second-place finish. The Hornets have won six of their last seven matches and are off to a 6-2 record to start the season. Fresno State, which finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, dropped to 4-3 overall this season. Notre Dame won the tournament by virtue of its 3-0 record while Cal Poly finished 0-3. Bandimere and Lutes each represented Sacramento State on the all-tournament team.
Prior to tonight’s victory, Fresno State had won three straight and seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams. The Hornets’ last victory over the Bulldogs had been a 3-1 victory at home in 1999.
Bandimere also led the team in kills with 16, while Hubbard completed her second double-double of the season with 10 kills. Senior Emily Wilson had 13 kills to round out the three Hornets with double figures in kills. Wilson and junior Natalie Melcher each had eight blocks while junior Shannon Arts added nine kills and five blocks. Senior Stephanie Gamst had five kills, a match-high .444 hitting percentage, 49 assists and 14 digs, and sophomore Shannon Roland added five kills, including three in the latter stages of game four.
Fresno State was led by Kristen Fenton’s 17 kills and 26 digs while Christianna Reneau added 15 kills and 13 digs. The Bulldogs dominated at the net with 19 team blocks, including 10 from Lauren Howell and eight from Amanda Magalei. Despite Fresno State’s advantage in team blocks (19-13), the Hornets dominated the Bulldogs in digs (105-91) and kills (63-53). The digs were a season high for the Hornets as the team was able to win despite hitting just .129 in the match. Fresno State mustered just a .071 hitting percentage as the Bulldogs committed 38 errors in 212 total attacks.
Game one was close throughout as Fresno State took the largest lead by any team at 16-10. Sacramento State battled back with the help of a 9-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 21-18. No team led by more than three points the rest of the way as both squads exchanged points until a Hornet service error gave the Bulldogs a 29-28 lead. The Hornets saved Fresno State’s game point as Tuli Peters committed an attack error to tie the score at 29-29. After Fresno State saved a Sacramento State game point at 30-29, a kill from Melcher and an error from Reneau ended things at 32-30 in favor of the Hornets. Both teams hit poorly in the game, as Fresno State tallied a .000 percentage while Sacramento State hit .017.
In the second game, Fresno State used a 10-4 run to break open what had been a 20-20 tie. Fenton and Reneau each had five kills as the Bulldogs limited the Hornets to a .102 hitting percentage. Sacramento State took its only lead of the game at 20-19 after Melcher and Wilson combined on a block, as Fresno State led for the majority of the frame.
Sacramento State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third game and never led by anything less than five points the rest of the way. The Hornets hit .357 in the game and had just three errors in 42 total attacks. The 30-16 margin of victory was also Sacramento State’s largest lead of the frame as Bandimere led all players with five kills.
In game four, Sacramento State erased a 27-23 deficit by going on a 5-0 run to take a 28-27 lead. Both teams exchanged points until a kill from Bandimere, and a block from Wilson and Bandimere ended the game and match at 31-29. The Hornets took just their second lead of the game at 28-27.
Sacramento State returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, as the team travels to Nevada to take on the Wolf Pack. The Hornets then serve as hosts of the two-day, 10-match Sacramento State Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 17-18. Sacramento State will face Charlotte (2 p.m.) and Seton Hall (7:30 p.m.) on Friday, and San Jose State (11:30 a.m.) and Oregon (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
NOTES -- The Hornets have yet to lose a game four this season (3-0)...the team is also 6-0 when winning the first game of a match this season.
