NOTRE DAME HALTS VOLLEYBALL’S WINNING STREAK

9/11/2004

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Lauren Kelbley (15), Lauren Brewster (15) and Adrianna Stasiuk (14) combined for 44 kills as Notre Dame defeated Sacramento State, 3-0 (30-16, 30-24, 30-28), in the second round of the Cal Poly Volleyball Invitational Saturday afternoon at Mott Gym.

With the loss, Sacramento State had its five-match winning streak snapped as the team dropped to 5-2 this season. Notre Dame, which improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 at the tournament, can win the tourney with a victory over host Cal Poly tonight. Sacramento State, which is now 1-1 at the tournament coupled with last night’s victory over Cal Poly, close the tournament with a match tonight against Fresno State (4:30 p.m.).

The contest marked the first time that Sacramento State and Notre Dame have ever faced each other. Notre Dame dropped out of the top 25 earlier this week and is currently the first team receiving votes in the AVCA/USA Today Top 25. Sacramento State had not been swept this year and recorded its worst loss since Pacific defeated the Hornets, 30-21, 30-23, 30-23, on Nov. 11 of last season.

Stasiuk’s 14 kills came with just three errors in 24 attacks as she finished with a match-high .458 hitting percentage to go along with 17 digs. Kelbley (.364) and Brewster (.323) also hit well as Notre Dame finished with a .311 hitting percentage. It marked the first time all season a team had hit anything better than .184 against the Hornets. Notre Dame also dominated defensively, tallying 80 digs to the Hornets’ 45, led by Meg Henican’s match-best 26 digs.

Sacramento State was led by junior Shannon Arts (nine kills, three blocks) and sophomore Shannon Roland (eight kills, team-best .381 hitting percentage). Sophomore Kristin Lutes led the team with 18 digs as no other Hornet had more than eight digs. Sacramento State recorded season lows in digs, hitting percentage (.116), kills (35) and assists (31). The match marked the first time all season the Hornets failed to have a player with double figures in kills.

The Fighting Irish led from start to finish in the first game and controlled throughout. Notre Dame used a 5-0 run to take an 11-5 lead and never by led anything less than five points the rest of the way. The Irish, who hit .333 in the first, closed the game on an 18-9 run. Stasiuk led all players with six kills and a .750 hitting percentage, while the Hornets hit just .021.

In the second game, Notre Dame again led from start to finish as the Irish ran off the first five points of the game. Sacramento State played from well behind the majority of the game until a 4-0 run drew the Hornets within, 24-21. That was as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the way as they could not compensate for Notre Dame’s Kelbley, who had 10 kills without an error in 14 attacks (.714) during the frame.

In the third and final game, no team led by anything more than four points during the entire frame as Notre Dame recorded consecutive kills after the Hornets had tied the match, 28-28. The Hornets had erased a 28-24 deficit with a Notre Dame service error, a Sacramento State block, a Bandimere kill and an Irish attack error, respectively.

In the first tournament match of the day, Fresno State defeated Cal Poly, 3-1 (28-30, 30-16, 30-22, 30-17). Fresno State, which lost in five games to Notre Dame yesterday, will bring a 1-1 tournament record into tonight’s match with the Hornets.

NOTES -- Sacramento State never led by anything more than one point during the entire match (five one-point leads during the third game)...the Hornets were swept in just five matches all of last season...Sacramento State is now 4-1 in tournament play this year after last weekend’s 3-0 record at the Nanook Volleyball Classic.
