TRAVEL-WEARY VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS PAST WEBER STATE; LUTES SETS PROGRAM RECORD

9/16/2006

OGDEN, Utah – Exactly 21 hours after beating Northern Arizona in Sacramento, the Hornet volleyball team traveled to Ogden, Utah, and knocked off Weber State, 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-27), in a Big Sky Conference match Saturday evening at Swenson Gym.

Only 21 hours separated the start times of last night’s victory over NAU and today’s win over Weber State, as Sacramento State improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big Sky. The Hornets have won a season-high six straight and nine of the last 10. In addition, the team has swept each of its last four opponents and five of the last six.

With the loss, Weber State dropped to 4-12 and 0-2 in the conference.

Sacramento State senior libero Kristin Lutes had 21 more digs, and now has 1,911 career digs which sets a new program record. Already the Big Sky’s all-time leader in career digs, Lutes moved past Carissa Buie (who previously had the record of 1,899 digs) into first place in the Sacramento State career record book.

The Hornets were led by Shannon Roland’s 12 kills and nine digs while junior Jennifer Ferguson added 10 kills and eight digs. Five Hornets had at least eight digs as the team finished with 65 over three games. Senior Atlee Hubbard (seven kills, 13 digs, four blocks), sophomore Rose Burke (35 assists, 10 digs) and Lutes (match-high 21 digs) chipped in to the defensive effort.

Weber State, which hit just .154 and had 12 service errors, was led by Leah Burmeister’s 13 kills.

Sacramento State returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 19, when the team travels to eighth-ranked Santa Clara. The Broncos knocked off the Hornets in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament before eventually reaching the Final Four.
