SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Atlee Hubbard had a match-high 14 kills and senior Shannon Roland added 10 kills to lead Sacramento State to a 3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-21) victory over Pacific in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at the Hornets Nest.With the victory, the Hornets have now won four in a row and seven of the last eight while improving to 10-3 overall this season. After dropping 25 of the first 27 matches to Pacific in the all-time series, Sacramento State has now defeated the Tigers in each of the last three meetings between the two teams. In fact, tonight’s win was the biggest blowout defeat of Pacific by the Hornets.
Pacific (1-8) had no answer for a Sacramento State defense which had 14.0 team blocks and limited the Tigers to a .100 hitting percentage. The Hornets, who are currently ranked 17th in the nation in both digs and blocks per game, ended the match in one hour and 25 minutes.
Sacramento State had more kills (50-35), assists (42-34), digs (44-42) and team blocks (14.0-8.0), and controlled the match from start to finish.
The Hornets hit a season-high .304 (50-15-115), including a .407 mark from Hubbard (14-3-27). For Roland, tonight’s match marked her ninth with double-figure kills this season. Junior Lindsay Haupt added eight kills and a match-high eight blocks, junior Jennifer Ferguson recorded seven kills and eight digs, and junior Michelle Franz chipped in five kills and six blocks. Franz, who was just named Big Sky Player of the Week, is currently ranked 14th in the nation in blocks with 1.67 per game.
Hornet senior Kristin Lutes led all players with 13 digs and is now just 28 digs shy of breaking the school record for career digs.
Pacific was led by Johanna Hilbers’ 10 kills while no other Tiger had more than six kills.
Sacramento State concludes its season long six-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 15, against Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. That match will also mark the Hornets’ Big Sky Conference opener as the team will attempt to win its 10th-consecutive league championship this year. After Friday night’s match ends, the Hornets will promptly hop on a plane Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m., and fly to Utah where the team will play Weber State at 4 p.m. PDT. Only 21 hours separate the start times between Friday and Saturday’s match.
