VOLLEYBALL POUNDS SYRACUSE, FINISHES TOURNAMENT WITH A 3-1 RECORD

9/9/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Lindsay Haupt recorded her third career double-double (11 kills, 10 blocks, .579 hitting percentage) to lead Sacramento State to a 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-23) victory over Syracuse in the fourth and final round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening at the Hornets Nest.

The match lasted just one hour, 21 minutes as Sacramento State limited Syracuse to a negative hitting percentage (-.046) and dominated throughout the match.

San Francisco was crowned tournament champions by virtue of its 4-0 record. The Dons swept UC Riverside and Syracuse, beat Western Kentucky in four games, and knocked off Sacramento State in five games, including a 16-14 victory in the fifth and final frame yesterday.

Sacramento State placed second at the tournament with a 3-1 record with the team’s only loss coming to San Francisco. Western Kentucky (2-2), UC Riverside (1-3) and Syracuse (0-4) rounded out the field. For Sacramento State, both junior Michelle Franz and senior Kristin Lutes were named to the all-tournament team. San Francisco’s Kristin Hasselberg was named tournament MVP as she was one of three Dons named all-tournament.

Haupt, who had eight blocks through two games tonight, led a Sacramento State blocking effort that resulted in 14.0 team blocks despite the match lasting just three games. In fact, the 14.0 team blocks tied for the third-highest output this season and the Hornets are now averaging 3.20 per game this year. Senior Leah Klemenhagen joined Haupt on numerous combo blocks and finished with a career-high seven. Klemenhagen has at least four blocks in each of her last four matches.

The Hornets tallied 41 kills and a .250 hitting percentage, but most of the team’s point production came on defense, recording 55 digs and forcing Syracuse into 37 attack errors. Lutes had 17 digs and finished the week with an average of 6.58 per game. Senior Atlee Hubbard recorded seven kills and 12 digs and senior Shannon Roland added seven kills and three blocks.

Sacramento State head coach Debby Colberg used all 13 active players on the roster, including freshmen Anna Schoener (four kills, three blocks, .571 hitting percentage), Melissa Melcher (18 assists, four digs) and Desireé Hoyum (three kills).

Franz finished with three blocks, snapping her streak of four-consecutive matches with at least six blocks. The junior from Carmichael still finished the week with an average of 2.26 blocks per game and is now averaging a team-best 1.65 this season.

Sacramento State is in the midst of a stretch that will see the team play six home matches in a span of eight days as the Hornets return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 12, against Pacific at 7 p.m. Sacramento State concludes its season-long six-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 15, in the Big Sky Conference opener against Northern Arizona at 7 p.m.
