RENO, Nev. – Senior Atlee Hubbard had a team-best 15 kills and junior Michelle Franz had a career-high 12 blocks to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 victory (30-28, 26-30, 30-28, 30-21) over Nevada in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at the Virginia Street Gym.With the victory, Sacramento State won its third in a row and improved to 6-2 overall this season. The win also snapped a four-match losing streak against Nevada in Reno. In fact, the Hornets had not beaten Nevada in Reno since the 1994 season. Sacramento State leads the all-time series with the Wolf Pack, 31-8, having never lost to Nevada at home (18-0).
Nevada (4-2) had its four-match winning streak snapped as the team had not lost since a season-opening defeat against Creighton.
Joining Hubbard in double-figure kills for the Hornets were junior Lindsay Haupt (13 kills, match-high .462 hitting percentage) and senior Shannon Roland (10 kills, five digs, three blocks). Sacramento State dominated at the net, tallying a season-best 17.0 team blocks as six different Hornets had at least three blocks.
Three Sacramento State players had double figures in digs comprised of senior Kristin Lutes (match-high 24), Hubbard (11) and junior Jennifer Ferguson (10). For Hubbard, it marked her third double-double of the season. Senior Leah Klemenhagen finished with four kills and three blocks, and sophomore Rose Burke added 35 assists and nine digs.
The Hornets limited Nevada to a .155 hitting percentage and took advantage of 16 Wolf Pack service errors. Nevada’s Teal Ericson led all players with 18 kills.
The Hornets return to action this week when the team hosts the Sacramento State Invitational this Friday-Saturday, Sept. 8-9, at the Hornets Nest. The tournament will serve as the team’s home opener as Sacramento State will play four matches over a span of two days. The Hornets open the tournament against both San Francisco (2:30 p.m.) and Western Kentucky (7:30 p.m.) on Friday before taking on UC Riverside (2:30 p.m.) and Syracuse (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
