VOLLEYBALL BLOCKS ITS WAY TO SWEEP OVER STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Six Hornets had at least three blocks, led by junior Lindsay Haupt’s game-high seven, as the Hornets swept Stephen F. Austin, 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-18), in the second round of the Arkansas Volleyball Invitational Friday afternoon at Barnhill Arena.Despite the match lasting just three games, the Hornets tallied 12.5 team blocks, the team’s second largest output of the season. Sacramento State limited the Ladyjacks to a .089 hitting percentage, the fourth time this year the Hornets have held the opposition under .100 (all victories).
With the win, Sacramento State improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 at the tournament. The Hornets, who fell to host Arkansas last night in four games, return to action for the third and final match of the tourney later this evening against Southeast Missouri State at 3 p.m. PDT.
With the loss, Stephen F. Austin, which had defeated New Mexico, Utah State and UC Riverside to begin the season, dropped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 at the tournament. The Ladytoppers went 28-3 last season and returned all but one starter for the 2006 season.
Haupt also had seven kills and two aces to go along with her seven blocks. The reigning Big Sky Most Valuable Player has at least four blocks in all but one match this season and is now averaging 1.52 per game. Franz has now hit at least .375 in each of her last three matches and raised her season hitting percentage to a team-best .337. Despite turning an ankle in the third game of last night’s match, Roland bounced back to record her fifth match this year with double-figure kills. Senior Kristin Lutes led the Hornets with 16 digs.
Stephen F. Austin was led by Traci Rohde’s 14 kills and Stephanie Figgers’ 17 digs.
