DESPITE 34 DIGS FROM LUTES, VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FOUR AT ARKANSAS

8/31/2006

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas’ Denitza Koleva led all player with 19 kills, and Sacramento State blew a 20-10 lead in the fourth game as the Razorbacks defeated the Hornets, 3-1 (30-18, 21-30, 30-25, 33-31), in the first round of the Arkansas Volleyball Invitational.

The loss came despite Sacramento State senior libero Kristin Lutes tallying 34 digs, two shy of her career high and tied for the eighth-best total in Hornet Div. I history (1991-pres.). The Hornets dropped to 3-2 this season and 0-1 at the tournament. Sacramento State resumes tournament action tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 1) against Stephen F. Austin (10 a.m. PDT) and Southeast Missouri State (3 p.m. PDT). Arkansas improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 at the tournament with the victory.

Arkansas, which went 21-12 overall and 10-4 at home last season, tallied 15 more kills than the Hornets (71-56) and took advantage of a season-high 12 service errors from Sacramento State. After winning two of the first three games, the Lady ‘Backs overcame deficits of 20-10 and 28-24 in the fourth game to win, 33-31.

During Arkansas’ 23-11 run to close game four, Jessica Dorrell tallied five of her 13 kills, including the game winner after Amy Allison had given the Razorbacks a 32-31 lead with a kill. Sacramento State also had a 22-20 lead in the third game, but Arkansas closed the frame on a 10-3 run.

Joining Koleva and Dorrell in double-figure kills for Arkansas were Kele Brewer (12 kills) and Allison (11 kills, match-high six blocks).

For Sacramento State, Lutes (34), junior Jennifer Ferguson (16) and sophomore Rose Burke (10) combined for 60 of the team’s 80 digs. Four Hornets had double figures in kills comprised of seniors Shannon Roland (14, .323 hitting percentage) and Atlee Hubbard (12), and junior middle hitters Lindsay Haupt (10 kills, five blocks, .318 hitting percentage) and Michelle Franz (10 kills, five blocks, team-best .450 hitting percentage). Roland has now led the Hornets in kills in four of the team’s first five matches.

The Hornets hit .326 in their victorious second game, but hit .184 or worse in every other game.
