VOLLEYBALL CONCLUDES TOURNAMENT WITH LOSS TO CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE

Senior Olivia Moss finished with five kills, four blocks and a .571 hitting percentage

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Tournament MVP Mahina Haina tallied a match-best 17 kills to lead Cal State Northridge to a 3-1 victory (25-14, 25-19, 17-25, 25-17) over the Hornets in the third and final round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening.

With the win, Cal State Northridge (4-2 overall) wins the Sacramento State Invitational by virtue of its 3-0 record at the tournament. Fresno State finished second with a 2-1 record, the Hornets were 1-2 and Marist finished 0-3. For complete tournament results, click here.

The Hornets (3-3 overall) lost to Fresno State last night, swept Marist earlier this afternoon and fell to the Matadors tonight to complete their tournament play. Sacramento State was represented by junior Jessie Genger and senior Breanne Menees on the all-tournament team.

In tonight’s match, the Matadors dug nearly everything in sight, finishing with 84 digs and limiting the Hornets to a .100 hitting percentage (39-23-160). In fact, only two Sacramento State players hit better than .190 in the match. Cal State Northridge led Sacramento State in kills (55-39), hitting percentage (.252-.100), assists (51-37), digs (84-64) and team blocks (11.0-8.0).

Haina’s 17 kills came with a .395 hitting percentage while Natalie Allen added 12 kills and 25 digs. Cindy Ortiz, who was one of three Matadors named to the all-tournament team, finished with 15 digs, and another all-tournament selection, setter Sydney Gedryn, had five kills, 38 assists, 12 digs and four blocks.

For Sacramento State, senior Eryn Kirby led the way with 10 kills and nine digs. Genger had seven kills and four blocks, and Olivia Moss had five kills, four blocks and a .571 hitting percentage. Menees led all players with 27 digs.

The Hornets return to action next weekend when they take part in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic in Berkeley. As part of the two-day tournament, the Hornets will face both Nevada and Georgetown on Friday and host Cal on Saturday.
