VOLLEYBALL SIGNS DIXON HIGH SCHOOL’S KAYLA BEAL

12/1/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head volleyball coach Ruben Volta announced today that rightside/outside hitter Kayla Beal (Dixon High School) has signed a National Letter of Intent, and will enroll at Sacramento State as a freshman in the fall of 2010.

A 5-foot-11 native of Dixon, Calif., Beal was the Capital Valley Conference MVP this past year after posting a league-best 4.8 kills per set and ranking fifth in the conference with 3.3 digs per set. The kills were the fifth most in the Sac-Joaquin Section and she guided the Rams to a 19-11 overall finish and a second-place league record of 12-2.

A three-time all-conference selection (first team as a junior and senior) and two-time team captain, Beal has led the Capital Valley Conference in kills each of the last two years (3.9 per set as a junior), and finished among the league’s top five players in digs the last two years as well. As a sophomore, she ranked first in the league in aces and second in blocks. Since 2007, Beal has helped lead Dixon High School to a combined 47-29 overall record, a 29-9 conference mark (including a league championship in 2008) and three section playoff appearances.

“Kayla is a very dynamic player that jumps really well and is the type of athlete that can terminate for us on the court,” Volta said. “She is a versatile player and has spent a lot of time at middle hitter, but we are looking for her to play on the right or left side.”

Beal currently plays for the Northern California Volleyball Club (NCVC), and the team’s coaching staff includes former Hornet Kristi (Lambert) Deter and current Hornet outside hitter Janelle Currey.

Beal joins Ashley Newcomb (MH/OPP from Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas) as the two players to sign with Sacramento State this year. The Hornets recently concluded the 2009 season with a 16-16 overall record despite playing with a roster that featured 10 underclassmen, including four freshmen and six sophomores. Sacramento State will return 11 players in 2010 as the team looks to regain the edge that has seen the program win 11 Big Sky Conference regular season and/or tournament championships over the last 13 seasons (1996-07).
